Jujutsu Kaisen Author Creates The Perfect Junji Ito Crossover

Horror anime can be harder to find than action or comedy series, but some popular franchises are still exploring the genre. Jujutsu Kaisen, for example, is known for its genuinely creepy monsters and villains – some of the scariest in all of shonen anime. Now that the third season has finished, Studio MAPPA quickly announced a fourth season is in production. Even better, the creator of JJK, Gege Akutami, isn’t slowing down and is collaborating with legendary horror artist Junji Ito on a special crossover.

Now that Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has finished, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen, Gege Akutami, has some free time. After years of working on the story of Yuji Itadori and the students at Jujutsu Tech, and with no new series planned, Akutami decided to draw one of Junji Ito’s most terrifying characters. While Tomie doesn’t have powers like a Domain Expansion, she’s always been a truly frightening figure in Ito’s work. Akutami recently shared this new artwork of Tomie—who’s appeared in many anime and live-action adaptations—in an issue of the Japanese magazine Da Vinci.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Junji Ito History

This isn’t the first time the worlds of Jujutsu Kaisen and Junji Ito’s horror have blended together. In the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen, specifically during the Shibuya Incident arc, the series clearly paid tribute to Ito’s Uzumaki. When a villain named Mahito was no longer needed, his power was absorbed by Kenjaku, creating a disturbing scene that strongly resembled panels from Uzumaki. Although not an official team-up, it’s evident that the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen is a fan of Ito’s work. Given Uzumaki’s recent popularity, it’s easy to see why the creator chose to include this homage.

I’m getting so excited about all the Junji Ito adaptations coming our way! It’s fantastic that Jujutsu Kaisen is still going strong, but Ito’s work is really taking off everywhere you look. We already knew about a new anime anthology series, and now Netflix is getting in on the action with something new in 2026! Plus, Bloody Smart is hitting the streaming service this year, which is going to be a cool live-action take on some of his characters. And it doesn’t stop there – Fangoria Studios is planning a whole trilogy of films! They’re going to bring Bloodsucking Darkness and Secret of the Haunted House to life as Western movies. We don’t have release dates for everything just yet, but honestly, the anticipation is already killing me!
