Even though Gege Akutami finished the Jujutsu Kaisen manga last year, there’s still plenty more to enjoy! The anime is continuing the story, and new spin-off novels are planned. But the biggest news this year was Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, a short sequel manga by Akutami with art by Yuji Iwasaki. This sequel has completely shaken things up, even changing the story’s genre by introducing aliens who came to Earth as refugees. Modulo is planned as a short series, lasting around six months and three volumes, but it’s already heading towards its dramatic conclusion, leaving fans worried about a sad ending.
As expected, Jujutsu Kaisen was a highlight of Jump Festa 2026, bringing some exciting news for fans. Jump Festa is a major annual event showcasing popular anime and manga, especially series from Shueisha’s magazines like Weekly Shonen Jump, Jump Square, V Jump, Saikyo Jump, and the Shonen Jump+ online platform. This year, fans were treated to a new trailer for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, along with fresh artwork from Akutami and Iwasaki. Akutami also shared the inspiration behind the upcoming sequel series.
Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Reveals Why Modulo Has Aliens in It

Because the first announcement was in Japanese, a Jujutsu Kaisen translator named @lightningclare on X posted an English translation for fans. Akutami, the creator, explained that “Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo” started with a simple concept: a spin-off story featuring sorcerers fighting aliens. They then wondered what those aliens would actually be like.
I’ve been thinking a lot about how to really maximize what we’ve built with the magazine, and we started brainstorming what kind of story we could tell in a shorter, serialized format. Instead of focusing on the art as much, we really dove into tackling modern storytelling challenges – a lot of trial and error, honestly! That’s how Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo came to be, born from that process of experimentation.
Akutami also shared excitement for Season 3 of the anime! They praised director Goshozono’s work and the overall production quality, highlighting how well the characters will be brought to life. They emphasized that the success is due to the dedication of the entire team, not just the director.
With Modulo launching in September of this year, the story is anticipated to finish around the middle of 2026. The author has confirmed it will be a concise story, with no plans to extend it. However, the anime adaptation will premiere on January 8th, 2026, with a special one-hour first episode featuring two episodes back-to-back.
