Gege Akutami’s incredibly popular manga, Jujutsu Kaisen, recently concluded in September 2024, but remains widely beloved. With a new season of the anime on the way and the release of the manga sequel, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, this September, its popularity continues to grow. Modulo, written by Akutami and illustrated by Yuji Iwasaki, is planned to run for about six months, but has already become a fan favorite, with readers eager for more. The sequel follows a new group of characters decades after the original story, facing entirely new and unique challenges.
Although Jujutsu Kaisen is incredibly popular, many fans agree it has flaws. One common criticism is that the series doesn’t fully explore the relationships between its characters. Strong character interactions are essential for building understanding and connection, and while the author, Akutami, is skilled at showing emotions and conflict, Jujutsu Kaisen sometimes lacks depth in this area. The new series, Modulo, offers a chance to address this and create more meaningful connections between the characters.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s Character Interactions Are Sidelined Due to Intense Fights

Like many action-packed anime, Jujutsu Kaisen focuses a lot on its fight scenes to move the story forward. This has led to important character moments being overlooked, especially after the Shibuya Incident arc. While earlier parts of the show were full of lighthearted and charming scenes that helped viewers connect with the characters, the story has since become almost non-stop action. This fast pace doesn’t allow enough time for natural relationship building, leaving only brief interactions between battles – not enough to truly feel connected to the characters.
I noticed the last part of the story really focused on characters discussing battle plans, either during fights or through memories. It made me realize how important those everyday interactions are. While fans of action stories definitely enjoy a good fight, it’s just as satisfying to see characters connect – sharing jokes, disagreements, or personal secrets. Honestly, adding those little moments could really draw readers in and make them care even more about what happens in the fights. It would help us see these characters as people, not just tools to move the plot forward or simply as fighters.
We need to see genuine connections develop to truly understand why characters become deeply attached and depend on each other, especially in life-or-death situations. Take Choso and Yuji, for instance. It’s hard to believe in their strong bond considering Yuji initially struggled to accept Choso. They clearly grew closer, but the series rushed past how that happened, simply presenting their relationship as it is without showing us the development.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Requires Communication Between Characters More Than Ever

The new manga series focuses on the idea of humans and an alien race, the Simurians, living together peacefully. After facing hardship, the Simurians seek refuge in Japan. But their large numbers and powerful abilities make the country’s sorcerers nervous. Both groups are trying to find a way to coexist without conflict, but things are complicated. Misunderstandings and resentment are likely to arise, and it will take a lot of work to achieve the peace they all desire.
So far, Modulo has prioritized developing its characters through conversations and relationships, which is building a solid base for the story. The interactions between Yuka and Cross, and the revealed history of Cross and Maru, give these characters welcome depth – something fans have been hoping for. The story in Modulo is really coming together, and while action is sure to come, the manga is already doing a better job than the original at showcasing how the characters relate to each other.
