Jujutsu Kaisen Director Unveils His Plans For Season 3: “Like a Bomb Dropping At The End”

The highly anticipated third season of Jujutsu Kaisen premiered as part of the Winter 2026 anime season and has already thrilled fans with its stunning animation and unexpected plot developments. This season promises to be even more action-packed than the previous Shibuya Incident Arc, with sorcerers compelled to fight in a dangerous, Kenjaku-controlled battle royale. While the season will be split into two parts, details about the second half haven’t been announced yet. The anime’s popularity is soaring, demonstrated by its opening theme reaching over 10 million views on YouTube in under 10 days. Released alongside the premiere, the opening video has garnered widespread praise from fans globally.

To celebrate this big achievement, the anime’s official website announced a giveaway, though it’s only open to residents of Japan. The website also included a special message from Shōta Goshozono, the director of Seasons 2 and 3. Goshozono took over directing duties from Sunghoo Park, who directed the first season, and helped make the series even more popular. The animation style has evolved quite a bit since Season 1, and fans are loving the exciting action scenes. As the director of Season 3 as well, Goshozono shared some of his plans for the anime’s future.

Shōta Goshozono Explains The Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Opening Sequence

The director described how he created the impressive opening sequence, emphasizing the tension between the established and new characters brought together by Kenjaku’s plan. Goshozono further explained a key aspect of the Culling Game, comparing it to the Shibuya Incident where the area’s identity was destroyed, leaving a blank slate. He sees this season as showing Yuji’s comeback from that point of devastation.

He believes this is a natural result of the work’s tendency to view all forms of culture and expression equally, and to find hidden worth in them. This idea is echoed in the Culling Game, which features past sorcerers, and is further emphasized by Kenjaku’s pursuit of new possibilities.

Goshozono explained the sudden ending of the opening sequence by saying that, because it’s the first part of the story, they wanted to create a cliffhanger that would build anticipation for what comes next, rather than wrapping things up neatly.

The opening sequence is visually stunning, reimagining famous paintings with the show’s characters. It hints at what’s to come without giving too much away, effectively building anticipation. The series skillfully blends its serious, often dark storyline with lighter, comedic moments, particularly in scenes featuring Yuji, Takaba, and Megumi. The first part of Season 3 will have 12 episodes, with new subtitled episodes released on Crunchyroll every Thursday at 8:30 AM Pacific Time.
