The Fall 2025 manga season has some exciting new releases, but Gege Akutami’s JJK Modulo – the sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen – has been a standout success. Unlike many sequel manga, it hasn’t let fans down. Instead, JJK Modulo has taken the popular action series in a fresh and innovative direction, and recent chapters suggest this trend will continue.
Chapter 8 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo shifts focus from the main storyline to explore the origins of Cross and Maru, the mysterious twins who debuted early in the series. Titled “Dura Val Bobbidi Mechika Part 1,” this flashback significantly expands the world of JJK and sets the stage for future events where the setting itself will play a crucial role.
JJK Modulo 8 Resets the Franchise With an Unexpected Alien Flashback

Unlike many other series, Jujutsu Kaisen doesn’t usually delve into the past. In fact, the author, Gege Akutami, has often been criticized for not explaining the world’s history enough. There are many unanswered questions about characters like Ryomen Sukuna and Yuji Itadori, and a lot of unexplained events. That’s why the backstory revealed for Maru and Cross in the Modulo sequel is particularly interesting – it’s a welcome change and a strong storytelling choice.
Chapter 8 of JJK Modulo starts with a surprising shift in scenery, showing the Simurians’ home planet during Cross and Maru’s childhood. While the previous chapters focused on their monitoring of Yuka and Tsurugi’s missions, this flashback actually connects well to the ideas explored in those scenes, especially considering conversations with the Okkotsu siblings. The change isn’t jarring at all, especially when compared to other unexpected moments in JJK, like Gojo’s death in Chapter 236. Gege Akutami has definitely made bigger, more sudden shifts before.
As the story in Chapter 8 unfolds, Akutami’s development as a writer really shines through. Previously, Jujutsu Kaisen often had trouble connecting a character’s reasons for acting with their personal history, and sometimes skipped character backstories altogether. However, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is doing things differently, as shown by the heartfelt flashback in the latest issue.
While we didn’t get a complete history of Tsurugi and Yuka’s childhood, it was shown in more depth than the backstories of most characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. If the current flashback featuring Cross and Maru continues at this pace for just one more chapter, it will become the longest flashback sequence in the series since the exploration of Satoru Gojo’s youth – a well-deserved distinction for two of Gege Akutami’s most compelling characters.
Maru and Cross Join Tsurugi and Yuka as Jujutsu Kaisen’s Newest Stars
The first few chapters of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo initially suggested Tsurugi and Yuka Okkotsu would be the main characters, and they’ve certainly played important roles. However, it’s become clear that the series’ success is largely thanks to the alien twins, Cross and Maru. While Tsurugi and Yuka follow in the footsteps of Maki and Yuta, Cross and Maru represent a completely new set of ideals, distinct from anything seen previously in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Cross and Maru, two orphaned children struggling to live in the harsh land of Rumel, embody different sides of the refugee experience. Looking back, their hardships in Chapter 8 of Modulo shed light on how they reacted to people on Earth earlier in the story. While the original Jujutsu Kaisen often dealt with serious topics, this flashback shows a new level of depth and maturity from author Gege Akutami, making “Dura Val Bobbidi Mechika, Part 1” another strong installment in the sequel manga.
Chapter 8 of JJK Modulo reveals a lot of backstory, much of it explained through direct narration rather than being shown through the story. However, this is easily overlooked because the unique setting of Cross and Maru’s home world is so well done. It truly feels like something out of a completely different manga, thanks to the fantastic combination of Akutami’s writing and Yuji Iwasaki’s consistently excellent artwork.
Cross and Maru both had difficult childhoods, and with their father figure, Daru, absent from the main story of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, they’re probably headed for even more hardship as this flashback unfolds. This sad beginning could explain a lot. However, what really sets Modulo Chapter 8 apart from other Jujutsu Kaisen stories isn’t just its tragic characters—it’s the fascinating connection between the Rumelians and the world around them that makes it truly special.
Gege Akutami Has Finally Defeated the World-Building Curse
When Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo started, fans weren’t sure what direction author Gege Akutami had planned for the story, or how it would connect to Jujutsu Kaisen. It quickly became clear that Akutami was aiming for something fresh, starting with how he built the world of this sequel. Among many spin-offs and sequels, Modulo is a standout example of a manga that innovates without compromising quality—it might even be a rare sequel that surpasses the original series.
Watching Cross and Maru’s story unfold, it’s really clear what’s at stake, and all the different groups involved have believable reasons for doing what they do. The author, Akutami, has built a solid world with a consistent logic. And while the story, Modulo, could easily lose what makes it special, the way it blends the jujutsu world with the events from Chapter 8 feels like Akutami is really hitting a stride in their writing – it’s better than ever before.
The ending of JJK Modulo Chapter 8 suggests the manga will soon reveal the history of the conflict between the Rumelians and the people of Deskunte. This could also introduce Dabura, a powerful weapon used by the Simurians. While it’s unclear where the author, Gege Akutami, will take the story, the chapter being labeled as ‘part one’ indicates a continued focus on the Rumelians and their story.
The sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, titled Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, is off to a strong start. Characters Cross and Maru are proving to be surprisingly important, and the story is finally expanding the world in meaningful ways. With at least four more months of Modulo‘s story planned for release in 2025/2026, the future looks bright. The series has been consistently good since its launch in Shonen Jump, and it’s gaining a growing audience, even capturing the imagination of fans in unexpected places, like through themes of outer space and the continuing spirits of Yuji Itadori and Satoru Gojo.
