Fans thought a spin-off of *Jujutsu Kaisen* was unlikely, considering how many storylines were still open in the original manga. However, the creator surprised everyone by announcing a sequel instead. Titled *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo*, and created by Gege Akutami with art by Yuji Iwasaki, the new story jumps ahead almost 70 years, featuring a fresh cast of characters and challenges. A particularly exciting reveal is that the main characters are the grandchildren of Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin – a pairing many fans hoped to see! But beyond that, the sequel’s central plot is the biggest surprise of all.
The story begins with the arrival of the Simurians, an alien race hoping to live peacefully alongside humans. However, they have incredibly powerful abilities, almost like magic, which makes peaceful coexistence uncertain. The situation quickly becomes more dangerous as it’s revealed the Simurians are as strong as Ryomen Sukuna, leading fans to wonder if Sukuna might have been an alien himself. The recent introduction of the alien characters Maru and Cross, and their complex relationship, mirrors Sukuna’s own past. This suggests the story might revisit Sukuna’s history through Maru and Cross, exploring aspects that the original *Jujutsu Kaisen* didn’t cover.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Lays the Foundation to Reinvent Sukuna’s Origins
Despite being the central villain in *Jujutsu Kaisen*, Sukuna’s backstory hasn’t been fully revealed through flashbacks, a common technique in many action-focused manga. Instead, details about his past are revealed sparingly, mostly through brief explanations within the story. These small pieces of information have slowly created a compelling mystery surrounding his origins, which fans have worked to unravel. A key hint appears after Gojo’s death, when Hajime Kashimo challenges Sukuna and asks how he became so powerful. Sukuna responds that he doesn’t know, only admitting he was born unwanted.
Looking closely at the original Japanese writing, it became clear Sukuna was talking about being born conjoined – essentially, as a twin. This was confirmed later in chapter 257, where he explained he nearly *was* a twin, but he consumed his twin brother while still in the womb. That twin’s spirit didn’t disappear, though; it eventually merged with Kenjaku, and the result was Yuji Itadori, the main hero of *Jujutsu Kaisen*. It’s interesting how Akutami portrays Yuji as representing light and goodness, while Sukuna embodies darkness and evil. It feels like a clear nod to the concept of Yin and Yang, suggesting that light will ultimately overcome darkness.
This storyline becomes even more interesting because Yuji wants Sukuna to find his own sense of goodness, believing Sukuna’s villainy stems from a lack of affection. While the original manga only touched on this idea in writing, the new characters Maru and Cross seem to mirror this theme. This suggests fans might finally see a full explanation of Sukuna’s past, something the original series only hinted at.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo‘s Central Aliens Could Reinvent Sukuna’s Origins
The first chapter of *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo* introduces Maru, who teams up with the Okkotsu siblings for a new mission. As the story unfolds, Maru shares that he has a brother, though they don’t get along. The next chapter reveals his brother’s name is Cross, and someone even mistakes him for Maru, suggesting they might be twins. While Maru seems kind and genuine, Cross appears doubtful and potentially dangerous.
As tensions rise between the sorcerers and the Simurians, Cross is poised to be the catalyst for an all-out conflict. This creates a parallel between Maru and Yuji, and Cross and Sukuna. The next installment will explore Cross’s past, likely revealing a heartbreaking story that explains his current state. However, because Maru represents hope, it’s probable he’ll fight alongside humanity when the war begins – not only to oppose his brother, but also to try and show him the importance of hope and living together peacefully.
If this new story comes to fruition, *Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo* will let fans see Sukuna’s story in a whole new light. It will also explore what could have happened if Sukuna had chosen to be good, potentially offering a more satisfying ending for one of anime’s most iconic villains.
