Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen centers around jujutsu, a form of Japanese martial arts focused on close combat. The series adds a fascinating supernatural element by making human emotions the source of power, called cursed energy. Those born with special abilities related to this energy become Jujutsu Sorcerers, who fight monsters born from negative human feelings. This combination creates exciting and unpredictable battles with fast-paced combat, though the series often emphasizes its supernatural powers more than traditional martial arts skills.
The new season of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is focusing more on hand-to-hand combat than the original series, especially in its later parts, where such fights were rare. Fans anticipated a similar style, but Modulo has doubled down on close-quarters battles. This is mainly because the character Tsurugi Okkotsu has a power that often puts him in direct physical confrontations. We’re now seeing him fight while connected to Rika, who is learning to adapt to this style. Even more unexpectedly, the fight between Dabura and Mahoraga is also moving away from long-range energy attacks and becoming a more physical battle.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Fully Embraces True Jujutsu in Its Latest Fights

Chapter 18 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, titled “One Who is Capable,” shows Maru and Tsurugi fighting, with Tsurugi clearly dominating. Tsurugi isn’t winning through skill, but by using raw power enhanced with cursed energy. Maru can’t defend against Tsurugi’s strong attacks and seems to be switching to hand-to-hand combat. The chapter then focuses on the intense battle between Mahoraga and Dabura. It’s revealed that Mahoraga is learning to overcome Dabura’s cursed technique. Eventually, Mahoraga adapts so completely that Dabura’s technique becomes useless, and Mahoraga can attack freely.
This moment makes Dabura consider he might lose. But remembering Doula’s advice and what it means to be a true fighter, he decides to fight with everything he has, relying on strength and direct attacks instead of curses. This is a smart move against Mahoraga, who can counter any technique. Since Maru and Tsurugi are already fighting up close, and now Dabura is too, it feels like the author is emphasizing basic, powerful fighting as Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo nears its conclusion. This focus on raw jujutsu is a new direction for the series.
