Jurassic World Rebirth Writer Compares New Movie to the Original Jurassic Park

As a lifelong fan of Jurassic Park, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming movie, Jurassic World Rebirth. David Koepp, the man who penned the original masterpiece, is back at the helm, promising a return to the spirit of the first installment that we all know and love.

Return to the thrilling realm of Jurassic Park, 32 years on since the iconic movie first roared onto our screens. After a three-year hiatus following 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, which appeared to have laid the series to rest, screenwriter David Koepp is now breathing new life into the Universal franchise with a revitalized Jurassic World Rebirth, a testament to its roots under the masterful direction of Steven Spielberg.

Koepp, who collaborated on the 1993 film “Jurassic Park” with author Michael Crichton and co-scripted “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” in 1997, disclosed that the upcoming fourth “Jurassic World” movie (being the seventh overall in the Jurassic series) will more closely emulate the essence of the initial film rather than the recent trilogy featuring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Koepp expressed on The Discourse Podcast that he hoped the movie would be well-received since the series shifted after “Jurassic Park III,” and it seemed like they were aiming for a new tone. He and Spielberg were drawn to a tone reminiscent of the original film, and Koepp viewed the movie as a mission with a focus on containment, much like stories driven by bottles.

The mission involves a brave group competing to gather DNA samples from the three largest beings found on land, water, and sky.

As a movie enthusiast, I found the process of crafting a tight-knit crew and an intriguing mission they must complete incredibly enjoyable. It was a blast revisiting the realm of exhilarating adventures grounded in authentic science, and creating fresh, captivating characters to populate this world. Few opportunities present themselves for starting from scratch and asking, “What do you want to achieve?” There were no pre-existing franchise pressures other than dinosaurs.

Koepp himself created a set of “nine rules” for the latest Jurassic film, which included points such as:

Edgar Edwards, known for films like Monsters, Godzilla (2014), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Creator, is helming the upcoming film produced by Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg, who also worked on the Indiana Jones and Jurassic World series. Patrick Crowley, a producer from the Jurassic World trilogy, is also involved in this project that will usher in a “new Jurassic” era.

In this production, Mahershala Ali, who has won two Oscars for his roles like Blade, portrays Zora’s reliable team leader, Duncan Kincaid. Jonathan Bailey, known for his work in Wicked, takes on the role of Dr. Henry Loomis, a paleontologist. Rupert Friend, famous from Obi-Wan Kenobi, joins as Martin Krebs, a representative for Big Pharma. Lastly, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, recognized in The Lincoln Lawyer, is cast as Reuben Delgado, the father of the stranded civilian family.

The ensemble features Luna Blaise from “Manifest”, David Iacono from “The Summer I Turned Pretty”, and Audrina Miranda from “Lopez vs. Lopez” portraying Reuben’s family, while Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein join the cast as part of Zora and Krebs’ separate teams or crews.

Universal Pictures has scheduled Jurassic World Rebirth to open in theaters July 2nd, 2025.
