For me, like many fans, the first Jurassic Park movie – the one based on Michael Crichton’s book – is the best. While I’ve had fun with some of the sequels, the Jurassic World films haven’t quite hit the mark. However, I really enjoyed Jurassic World Rebirth. Luckily, it seems like we’ll be seeing dinosaurs on screen for a while yet, according to recent news about Universal Pictures’ plans for the franchise.
Universal Pictures is planning a sequel to Rebirth and is aiming to reunite the original creative team. Sources say director Gareth Edwards is close to signing on, and stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are all likely to return. While the project is still in its early phases with no confirmed release date, the studio appears confident in the film’s potential, likely due to the financial success of the first Rebirth movie.

Why A Jurassic Sequel Makes Sense
The Jurassic World franchise continues to be a huge success at the box office. Currently, Jurassic World Rebirth is the fourth highest-grossing film of 2025 globally, behind only A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Ne Zha 2. With fewer major blockbusters scheduled for the rest of the year, Rebirth is very likely to finish in the top 10 highest-grossing films worldwide. This is a remarkable achievement, considering that interest in other blockbuster genres, like superhero movies, has recently decreased. It seems dinosaurs are still a major draw for moviegoers.
Hopefully, Universal isn’t so focused on if they can make more ‘Jurassic Park’ movies that they haven’t considered if they should. While a new movie would likely be profitable, the creative direction is less certain. Recent sequels, despite interesting ideas like dinosaurs coexisting with humans today, haven’t managed to recreate the compelling story and emotional impact of the original 1993 film directed by Steven Spielberg.
The film Rebirth received criticism for its predictable storyline and underdeveloped characters. Despite strong performances and the charisma of stars Johansson, Ali, and Bailey, their characters haven’t become truly memorable.

Will Audiences Show Up For A Sequel?
Universal Studios is at a crossroads with the Jurassic Park franchise. They need to decide whether to stick with the formula that’s been profitable or take a chance with a new creative direction. The latest film, Rebirth, didn’t reach the $1 billion mark like 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, raising worries that audiences might be getting tired of the series. History shows that lukewarm reviews can significantly hurt box office numbers – just look at Jurassic Park III and its famously silly talking dinosaur.

You can stream the entire Jurassic Park and Jurassic World series on Peacock TV. Subscriptions start at just $7.99 per month, or $79.99 for a year. For an ad-free experience and the ability to download shows and movies to watch offline, consider upgrading to Peacock Premium or Peacock Premium Plus. See the deal here.
Universal has a good chance of making another successful sequel if they bring back director Gareth Edwards and the original cast. A new story with fresh ideas could breathe life back into the Jurassic Park franchise, which has been somewhat overshadowed by its own history. While it’s a bit of a gamble, the pieces are already there for a win.
It remains to be seen what the next chapter of this popular series will be like, but in the meantime, you can watch Jurassic World Rebirth on Peacock.
