Fans hoping for a new Just Cause game received disappointing news recently. The Just Cause series has been popular since the first game launched in 2006, and while Just Cause 4 came out in 2018, players have been anticipating a sequel. Despite remaining optimistic for news from Avalanche Studios, an update from former studio head Christopher Sundberg – who left in 2019 – wasn’t what they wanted to hear.
On November 3, 2025, Sundbert announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a fifth installment in the Just Cause series is unlikely to ever be released. Although rumors of the game’s cancellation began in July 2023, many fans held out hope for a simple delay. The franchise is popular, and Just Cause 4 was successfully completed. However, the core issue lies with Avalanche Studios – specifically, the fact that very few members of the original development team remain. Sundbert’s post suggests that without those key creators, a fifth game isn’t feasible.
Just Cause 5 Probably Won’t Be Made

When the main people working on a game leave a studio, it’s rare to see truly innovative new projects emerge. Often, existing franchises, like Just Cause, are simply sold off to another developer. Avalanche Studios isn’t dwelling on past successes with its next project; it was heavily invested in Contraband, a game planned for Xbox. Although Microsoft canceled that game, details remain on the studio’s website, suggesting it might still be planned for other platforms like PlayStation or PC. Notably absent is any mention of a new Just Cause game – Just Cause 5.
My team and I originally presented the concept for Contraband to Microsoft back in 2017, and they approved it. While the project has evolved significantly since then, it would have been great to see it released. However, a continuation of Just Cause 5 with the original team isn’t feasible, as very few of the people who worked on it are still with the company.

The Just Cause series has seen its share of successes and failures. Square Enix previously worked on Just Cause Mobile, which even had a limited release in 2021. However, the game was cancelled in 2023 before it could launch worldwide. Now, it looks like Just Cause 5 is also unlikely to happen – Avalanche Studios isn’t working on it, and the rights haven’t been sold to another developer. While this doesn’t mean a new Just Cause game will never be made, fans might have to wait a long time for it.
The Just Cause series has a dedicated fanbase, but it hasn’t been a top performer in the gaming market. It’s been on hold since 2018, so there isn’t huge demand for a new game. While Just Cause 4 sold around four million copies – a respectable number – that’s significantly less than franchises like Grand Theft Auto or The Last of Us. Despite this, the cancellation of Just Cause 5 is disappointing for many, and currently, it looks like the series is finished.
