In the heart of the All In era, DC left us spellbound with their time-traveling masterpiece “We Are Yesterday”. Yet, the true charm of such events lies in the unpredictable world they spark. The embodiment of this chaos is perfectly captured in DC’s latest one-shot, “Justice League: Dark Tomorrow“, which delves into the aftermath of “We Are Yesterday” while simultaneously paving the way for a pulse-pounding time-travel journey featuring an eclectic ensemble that keeps you guessing. By the end of this exhilarating ride, it’s the burning question on everyone’s lips: when will we reunite with them again? Because in every sense, they are the team we didn’t realize we were yearning for, and it would be a tragedy not to witness their journey continue.
Writers Marc Guggenheim and Mark Waid continue the narrative from “We Are Yesterday” while connecting it to the larger storyline unfolding across the DC universe. In “Dark Tomorrow”, they effectively recap the main events of the previous story and quickly set the stage for new developments. Essentially, Gorilla Grodd’s actions have disrupted the timeline, resulting in people finding themselves in eras that are not their own. This unexpected twist creates an entertaining turn of events.
This story is largely driven by an unanticipated assembly of characters, who strive to safeguard DC’s time travelers after a series of murders. The assortment of these heroes is quite diverse. I must admit that it includes two of my personal favorites, but even without them, the team remains captivating. To be honest, I didn’t expect a team comprising Batman Beyond, Huntress, Marilyn Moonlight, Jonah Hex, Amazing Man, Gold Beetle, Plastic Man, and Airwave, but they quickly won my affection.
In this team, I found myself instantly drawn in by the blend of characters spanning different eras and personalities. What truly stands out, though, is how Guggenheim and Waid manage to bring some underestimated heroes to the forefront, such as Moonlight and Jonah Hex. At several points, these two really come alive, and their interactions with our enigmatic leader, Legend, are particularly captivating. Yet, they subtly drop hints about their identities throughout, adding an intriguing layer to their characters.
The gripping narrative of “Dark Tomorrow” wouldn’t be as captivating without the exceptional artwork by Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr on colors, and Dave Sharpe on letters. These artists skillfully leverage the team’s unique characteristics and diverse talents throughout the issue. Whether it’s Plastic Man transforming into a colossal mech, Hex displaying his ferocity with twin pistols, or Airwave amplifying his power, each sequence is brilliantly executed in its own unique fashion. We must also acknowledge the team’s ingenious use of visor reflections, which recur throughout the issue and leave us awestruck every time we see them.
To put it plainly, the main flaw with this series is that it abruptly ends when things start getting interesting, leaving viewers craving more. On the other hand, there’s no definitive roadmap for the team’s future, with hints that their journey continues in Justice League Unlimited and DC K.O., but their role in those stories remains unclear at this point. It’s not essential reading, and your enjoyment might differ based on whether any of these characters are among your personal favorites.
From my perspective, the first issue of “Justice League: Dark Tomorrow Special” truly shines as a tantalizing glimpse into what could be, showcasing immense potential and promise. At the moment, it’s unclear where the story will lead us next, but I eagerly anticipate further adventures for this fresh, endearing team in the days ahead.
