Taron Egerton has previously worked in the spy genre through his roles in the Kingsman series, but it’s unlikely he will take on the role of James Bond in the future. In an interview with Collider to promote his latest film She Rides Shotgun, Egerton expressed that he doesn’t consider himself a suitable candidate for the part. He feels that at this stage in his career, he prefers focusing on smaller-scale projects and isn’t confident that he would enjoy the responsibilities associated with being James Bond.
Egerton stated, “I’m afraid I’m not the right fit for it. I believe I’m too disorganized for such a role. I adore James Bond, especially Daniel Craig’s portrayal. However, I don’t think I would excel in that position. There are numerous talented, younger actors who would be ideal for it. I feel like it wouldn’t benefit me, and perhaps… it’s not something that would bring me the most joy. I do recognize that it’s a significant commitment, a role like that tends to take over your life.
Following Amazon taking over creative leadership of the James Bond series earlier this year, significant strides are being taken towards the upcoming film. Notably, Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve has been enlisted for James Bond 26, a project he’ll tackle once he completes work on Dune: Messiah (still in production). As of now, no official release date has been announced, but there are whispers that Amazon is aiming to premiere Bond 26 in cinemas by 2028.
Accompanied by Villeneuve, our immediate task now involves selecting the upcoming James Bond actor. In mid-June, it was rumored that Amazon was looking for a young British actor below 30 years old. Names like Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, and Harris Dickinson were mentioned as potential candidates. This age requirement would exclude popular fan favorites such as Henry Cavill and Idris Elba from contention.
I’m 35 years old, and some might think that age could exclude me from certain roles. But it’s intriguing to see myself openly expressing reservations about taking on the role of Bond. Villeneuve is a director many actors dream of working with, and rightfully so. However, Egerton raises valid concerns about the demanding nature of being the face of a franchise like James Bond. Not only are the film productions lengthy, but there are also global press tours and other responsibilities that come with it. A commitment to a blockbuster series could potentially limit an actor’s creative freedom, essentially tying them to one character for an extended period. Given that Egerton is drawn to projects that resonate more deeply on a creative level, it’s not surprising that he might hesitate at the prospect of becoming James Bond.
As a cinephile observing the ongoing search for the new 007, I can’t help but feel the immense responsibility that lies ahead for the chosen one. As Samual L. Jackson’s Kingsman character wisely noted, this is no ordinary task; it requires an actor capable of carrying the iconic franchise through numerous films for years to come.
Despite initial impressions, this role isn’t a walk in the park — even if someone like Egerton (whose charming portrayal of Eggsy in the Kingsman series echoes the essence of James Bond) appears to be an ideal fit on paper. It remains intriguing to speculate who will ultimately step into Daniel Craig’s shoes.
Amazon might opt for a fresh face, one that can effortlessly slip into the role and become the new embodiment of 007. Only time will tell whom they choose, but I am eagerly awaiting the reveal with bated breath.
