Looking for a thrilling weekend watch? Netflix’s Kaleidoscope delivers action, suspense, and plenty of twists. It launched on January 1st, 2023, and initially generated a lot of buzz thanks to its unique format. However, unlike other popular Netflix thrillers like You (with its memorable character Joe Goldberg) and Mindhunter, Kaleidoscope didn’t maintain lasting attention.
Ridley Scott is famous for directing classic films like Alien and Gladiator, but he’s also been a major force in television. Along with his brother Tony, he was an executive producer on the critically acclaimed legal drama The Good Wife. Scott also helped bring the dark and intense historical drama The Terror to the screen, and produced the 2019 TV series based on Justin Cronin’s The Passage (though that one didn’t quite live up to expectations). More recently, he was an executive producer on Netflix’s Kaleidoscope, which, even though it’s been a couple of years since its release, is still a show worth checking out.
‘Kaleidoscope’ Is a Unique Heist Thriller You Should Binge-Watch on Netflix

Kaleidoscope isn‘t your typical heist story. What makes it unique is that you can watch the eight episodes in any order you choose! According to executive producer Russell Fine, the different colored episodes all come together to create a whole, just like colors making white – which is also the name of the final episode. Netflix describes it as a fast-paced, weekend-perfect binge where every episode is important to the overall story.
Instead of watching Kaleidoscope as a traditional pilot, you’ll start streaming episodes based on a randomly selected beginning. You do have some control, though – you can choose the order in which you watch them. Some viewers enjoyed watching the episodes in chronological order, and that’s one option. Regardless of the order you pick, the episode titled “White” is intended to be the last one you see. According to Eric Garcia, the series creator, he shared this with Netflix.tudum.com.
The ‘White’ episode reveals the real reasons behind everything that’s been happening, connecting clues from earlier and later events. It finally explains what everyone is truly after, acting like a key that unlocks all the mysteries.
The series Kaleidoscope features a compelling cast of characters, notably Leo Pap (Giancarlo Esposito), the mastermind behind the heist, and his daughter, Hannah Kim (Tati Gabrielle). Other key players include lawyer Ava Mercer (Paz Vega) and Roger Salas (Rufus Sewell), who is a close associate of Leo. Similar to great heist films, Kaleidoscope skillfully combines thrilling action with in-depth character development.

Ridley Scott enjoys watching TV shows in quick succession, and the Netflix thriller he helped create is perfect for that kind of viewing. He explained to IndieWire that he needs to watch good TV right away, saying, “Once I see good TV, I want to see it immediately.” It seems we share that feeling!
Could Kaleidoscope have been as interesting if it hadn’t been presented in a non-linear way, with viewers able to watch episodes in any order? That’s worth considering. While the series currently has a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and some viewers weren’t thrilled with the final episode, “White,” it does successfully keep you guessing and tells a complete story about a massive heist. With $7 billion in bonds at stake, it’s hard not to be invested. Interestingly, the creator, Garcia, revealed to Netflix.tudum.com that the idea for the show came from a real event: $70 billion worth of bonds were actually flooded in the basement of the DTCC after Hurricane Sandy.
