Karl Urban Wants To Reprise His Judge Dredd Role

Karl Urban just teased a possible return to one of his superhuman characters.

Recently, Urban acted with Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the new Amazon Prime movie, The Bluff. It’s an exciting pirate film with a powerful female character and lots of sword fighting. Both Urban and Jonas discussed their experience filming with The Playlist and what they’re planning next. During the interview, Urban shared which role he’d love to play again.

In 2012, he played Judge Dredd in the movie Dredd. While not a superhero with special powers, the character is incredibly skilled at shooting, fighting, and is at the peak of human physical condition. He maintains law and order in Mega-City One, a city plagued by crime.

I’d jump at the chance to play that role again – I really enjoyed making the movie. But if the project moves forward without me, that’s fine too. Ultimately, I just want to see more stories told in the world of Dredd.

As a huge cinema fan, I always love revisiting films that hold up, and Dredd definitely does. It’s still got an impressive 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! I remember really enjoying Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey (who I knew from Game of Thrones) alongside Karl Urban. It’s funny to think that before Urban, Sylvester Stallone played Judge Dredd back in 1995 – a very different take on the character, to say the least!

Taika Waititi will direct a new Judge Dredd movie, set to be written by Drew Pearce, who also worked on Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. While details are scarce, this film is expected to draw more heavily from the original comic books than past movies.

Taika Waititi is celebrated for bringing a vibrant and playful energy to his films. He’s directed several popular movies, including the Marvel films Thor: Ragnarök and Thor: Love and Thunder. He’s also known for directing and starring in What We Do in the Shadows, and for his satirical take on World War II in Jojo Rabbit.

He received an Academy Award for adapting the screenplay for Jojo Rabbit and a Grammy for the film’s soundtrack. Given his previous achievements, audiences can be optimistic that his upcoming Judge Dredd project will be a faithful and respectful adaptation of the source material, even if Karl Urban doesn’t reprise his role.

You can now watch the film The Bluff, directed by Urban and Jonas, on Amazon Prime. Additionally, Jonas appears in the Prime Video series The Boys, with its last season coming out this spring.
