Following news of Katy Perry’s relationship with Justin Trudeau, her ex-husband—an actor who has become a conservative voice—publicly shared his thoughts on the pairing.

I’ve been a longtime follower of Russell Brand, and I was really struck by something he shared recently. Speaking at a Turning Point USA event on December 18th, he talked about his marriage to Katy Perry, and he genuinely said he still loves her. It was a really heartfelt thing to hear him say.

Russell Brand, the actor known for Get Him to the Greek, doesn’t like being linked to Katy Perry, even though they haven’t been connected for over a decade. He also dislikes being compared to a former Canadian prime minister. Brand shares two daughters, Mabel, 9, and Peggy, 7, with his wife, Laura Gallacher Brand.

Russell said he didn’t mind being mentioned alongside Orlando Bloom, but he was upset about being compared to Justin Trudeau, calling him a pawn of global elites.

Katy has talked about how her relationship and breakup with Russell deeply affected her life, a period she famously documented in her 2012 tour film, Part of Me.

Katy, who shares 5-year-old daughter Daisy Dove with Orlando, explained in a 2020 interview with 60 Minutes Australia that a particular relationship challenged her optimistic worldview. She was experiencing a lot of success in her early twenties, but then met someone who was both exciting and overwhelming. She described the situation as chaotic and happening very quickly.

And when it came to a crashing halt, Katy emphasized she was dancing through the fire. 

She shared that she’s always been drawn to difficult situations and challenges. She believes that even though things might be hard work, overcoming those obstacles can lead to something wonderful, like the intense pressure needed to create a beautiful diamond.

Katy recently addressed her breakup with Orlando, which happened in June, in her new song “Bandaids.”

In the song, released last month, she sings about giving her all to a relationship, saying, ‘I swear I tried everything.’ She continues, explaining the problem wasn’t something he did wrong, but rather his lack of presence or effort: ‘You were physically there, but emotionally absent.’

Despite facing challenges throughout her life, the 41-year-old has maintained a core part of who she is that remains untouched.

I’ll never forget when she said something so powerful on CBC’s Q back in 2020, right after her first split from Orlando. She explained that going through that heartbreak was actually necessary for her to discover a deeper, truer version of herself. A video surfaced around 10 years ago showing Katy Perry energetically performing and crowd-surfing at a Relient K concert. This footage dates back to the early 2000s, when she was dating the band’s singer, Matt Thiesen.

Regardless, they were close enough that Diplo caused a stir among Taylor Swift’s fans with a tweet making a comment about her appearance.

He and Swift seemingly made up a few months later at the Grammys.

Mayer just kept coming around, until they finally seemed to part ways for good in 2015.

Some people thought that several songs on Katy Perry’s 2017 album, Witness – like the title track and “Miss You More” – sounded a bit like they were influenced by John Mayer.

Also, Mayer had recently released the song “Still Feel Like Your Man” in April, and he admitted it was about Perry, proving that old feelings can linger.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom connected at an after-party following the 2016 Golden Globes, and their relationship quickly blossomed. They traveled the world together, visiting places like Hawaii, Italy, and even the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

By early 2017, their intense relationship had likely ended. Representatives for both parties stated they were simply taking some respectful and loving time apart, which was a much more positive way to handle things than a messy, public breakup.

According to a source at TopMob News, Katy ended the relationship. Several things happened in recent months that led to the split, but the source says both Katy and her partner still care for each other and a reconciliation isn’t out of the question after they’ve had time apart.

After reconnecting months prior, Perry announced her engagement in 2019 with a picture of her ring and the caption, “Full bloom.”

The couple had a daughter, Daisy Dove, in 2020. They announced their split in July 2025, with representatives stating they had been gradually transitioning to a coparenting relationship for several months.
