Beware, spoilers ahead for Season 1, Episode 4 of Dutton Ranch, titled “Start With A Bullet!” While fans are eager to see Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) join Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in Rio Paloma, Texas, after the conclusion of Marshals season 1, he won’t be able to help them resolve their current problems, even if he does appear in the next episode of Dutton Ranch.
Okay, so after episode four of Dutton Ranch, things get really bad for Beth and Rip. They had to make the devastating decision to get rid of their entire herd of black angus cattle because of foot-and-mouth disease. It wasn’t just heartbreaking to watch, but it completely wiped out their new beef business and basically left the ranch with no money. It’s a huge blow, and I’m honestly on the edge of my seat to see how they’ll recover!
Six months after a terrible fire destroyed their ranch in Dillon, Montana, Beth, Rip, and Carter relocated to South Texas to start over. They used everything they had left to purchase the Edwards Ranch in Rio Paloma, but are now completely broke. Kayce is unable to offer them financial help.
Why Beth & Rip Can’t Call On Kayce For Help With Dutton Ranch
Even if Beth and Rip asked Kayce for help, he likely couldn’t cover their losses. While Kayce, as a U.S. Marshal, now makes a decent salary – somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000 – the stolen black angus cattle were worth millions of dollars.
In the season one finale of Marshals, Kayce refused a substantial offer from Thomas Weaver (Chris Mulkey) to purchase East Camp – the final section of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch not already sold to the Broken Rock Reservation. While the exact amount Weaver offered remains unknown, Kayce chose to keep this last piece of the ranch, turning down a significant sum of money.
In the final episode of Yellowstone, Beth and Rip didn’t benefit much from Kayce’s sale of the ranch to Thomas Rainwater. Broken Rock Reservation paid only $1.1 million for the entire Yellowstone, a price reflecting 19th-century values. Since Kayce planned to split the money with his sister, Beth’s share is now spent.
If Beth ever asked Kayce for money, he’d probably give her everything he had. However, even with his help, it wouldn’t be enough to save the Dutton Ranch, replace the lost cattle, or pay the ranch hands like Rip, Azul Ramos, and Zachariah.
The Duttons Were Never As Rich As They Seemed
Although the Dutton family had owned the biggest ranch in the US for generations, they weren’t as wealthy as people thought. Their land was actually worth far more than the $1.1 million Kayce ultimately sold it for, but the Duttons didn’t have easy access to that money – it wasn’t like a readily available source of cash.
Even though John Dutton is the patriarch, Beth actually had more of her own money. Throughout most of the series Yellowstone, Beth worked as a successful banker and probably had over a million dollars, judging by her expensive cars. But she left her career to support her father, and now her finances are linked to the ranch.
When Yellowstone started, Kayce wasn’t wealthy. He was a father and making a modest living training horses at the Broken Rock Reservation. While his jobs as Livestock Commissioner and now a U.S. Marshal have brought in more money, he’s still far from being a millionaire, and probably always will be.
After dedicating 25 years to the Yellowstone, Rip hoped the Dutton Ranch would finally be his own place to manage. Beth envisioned a successful business supplying premium black angus beef from the ranch to upscale restaurants in Dallas, but that plan fell apart when they lost their cattle.
Now that the first season of Marshals has finished airing on CBS, there’s no evidence Luke Grimes appeared in the first season of Dutton Ranch. A reunion with the Yellowstone cast would have been a big draw for Paramount+ and likely promoted heavily, and fans are still hoping for a crossover in the future.
No matter what happens with Kayce, Beth and Rip will need to find their own way to deal with the coming challenges, which are sure to lead Dutton Ranch into a dramatic and uncertain future.
