According to FlixPatrol, Good Fortune is currently the seventh most popular movie on Prime Video globally. It’s also a top 10 hit in several countries, including Argentina, Colombia, Honduras, Panama, and Paraguay. Viewers in Brazil and Finland have made it the fourth most-watched film on the platform, and it briefly reached number two in Poland.
Featuring Seth Rogen, Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, and Keanu Reeves, Good Fortune was written and directed by Ansari. While it didn’t perform well in theaters—earning $26 million from a $30 million budget—the film is now finding success as a streaming release.
What Is Good Fortune About?
In the series Good Fortune, Aziz Ansari plays Arj, a struggling man living out of his car. He earns money by doing small tasks for wealthy individuals, like Jeff (Rogen). However, his life changes when he reaches his lowest point and meets Gabriel, an angel who helps him realize that wealth and success aren’t everything.
Gabriel’s well-intentioned plans for Arj don’t quite work out. He quickly discovers that money does fix Arj’s issues, which means the valuable lesson Gabriel wanted Arj to learn is overlooked. To make matters worse, Gabriel loses his wings when his attempt to help goes wrong.
Good Fortune Received Positive Reviews from Critics
I was so thrilled to see that despite not doing well in theaters, Good Fortune really resonated with critics! It currently has a fantastic 78% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is amazing. Brian Truitt from USA Today perfectly summed it up, saying the director created a comedy that’s both funny and thought-provoking – I completely agree!
In a review for Rolling Stone, David Fear praised Keanu Reeves’ performance, saying he’s hilarious, brilliant, and perfectly captures the role of a well-intentioned character whose plan falls apart. Fear felt Reeves was so good, he essentially carried the movie and made it his own.
The movie has been well-received, earning an 81% score on the Popcornmeter. One viewer, Hassan H, called it “one of the funniest movies I’ve seen this year!” and praised Keanu Reeves’ performance. On IMDb, it currently has a rating of 6.5 based on over 41,000 reviews.
With so many sequels and remakes, it’s tough for truly original movies to stand out in cinemas. However, the strong performance of Good Fortune on streaming platforms shows it’s a film with real potential, and critics seem to agree. Good Fortune also marked Aziz Ansari’s first time directing, and it suggests we can look forward to even more great comedies from him in the future.
