Keanu Reeves is starring in a new science fiction film directed by a popular director known for their work with Marvel. Although Reeves is currently famous for action movies like the John Wick series, he has a long history with sci-fi. Before John Wick, he was best known for The Matrix, where he played the main character, Neo. He’s also appeared in other sci-fi films like Johnny Mnemonic, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure series. Warner Bros. is likely hoping this new movie will be as successful as The Matrix and Bill & Ted, rather than a film like Johnny Mnemonic.
Keanu Reeves is set to star in a new sci-fi thriller called Shiver, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Warner Bros. is finalizing a deal to bring Reeves on board, along with Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool, who is expected to direct. Matthew Vaughn, known for films like Kingsman and X-Men: First Class, will produce. The screenplay was written by Ian Shorr.
The new movie has been compared to both Edge of Tomorrow, with its time loop concept and action during an invasion, and The Shallows, a thrilling survival story. The plot centers around a smuggler working in the Craibberan Sea who gets caught in a dangerous double-cross. He finds himself trapped in a deadly situation with bodies, mercenaries, and sharks, and then becomes stuck in a time loop, forcing him to figure out how to escape.
New Sci-Fi Movie Could Turn Around Keanu Reeves’ Non-John Wick Career

Tom Cruise’s film Edge of Tomorrow received widespread praise upon its release. The movie features Cruise as a soldier caught in a time loop, repeatedly experiencing a losing battle against an alien invasion. He desperately tries to change the outcome, but initially, no one takes him seriously. It’s considered one of Cruise’s strongest sci-fi roles. Now, Keanu Reeves, another talented sci-fi actor, could benefit from a similar success to reverse a concerning pattern in his recent films.
Keanu Reeves is famous for the success of the John Wick movies, but his other recent films haven’t performed as well. While he returned to the Matrix series with The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, it was the lowest-grossing film in the franchise. Bill & Ted Face the Music earned only $6.2 million, and even the John Wick spin-off Ballerina underperformed, bringing in $131 million. His newest movie, Good Fortune, has also been a box-office disappointment, earning just $13.2 million in its first two weekends.
Hiring the director of Deadpool could generate more excitement for the upcoming Keanu Reeves sci-fi film. However, even a director with Tim Miller’s experience isn’t a guaranteed success. His 2019 film, Terminator: Dark Fate, didn’t revitalize that franchise as much as the studio wanted, and he didn’t direct any further Deadpool movies after the first one. Still, there’s optimism that this new project will attract viewers, particularly fans hoping to see Keanu Reeves star in another successful sci-fi film.
