The Kennedys are back at it again.
Following the whole family’s yearly Fourth of July group picture, Kerry Kennedy – the third child of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy – offered a peek at their grand festivities they had.
“Wishing a joyful birthday to Chris, Kathleen, and America! Chris Kennedy celebrated his 62nd birthday on this special day, while Kathleen Kennedy Townsend turned 72.”
In the video, numerous relatives applauded from a lush green lawn, which seems to be the family’s property in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Simultaneously, the cameraman hollered “Happy birthday, happy birthday” before capturing the breathtaking sunset over the water.
In a different message, she honored her mother, Ethel Kennedy (who passed away in October 2024 at the age of 96), with a heartwarming old picture.
Each year, Mom took charge of the annual Fourth of July parade in Hyannis Port, adorning her golf cart with red, white, and blue decorations for the occasion. However, she understood that patriotism encompasses much more than just celebrations. (Kerry posted this on Instagram on July 4th)
In the year 2018, my mother took part in a 24-hour fast as a form of protest against President Trump’s harsh ‘zero tolerance’ immigration policy. She expressed that this action was her way of expressing love for her country by demanding accountability and striving to improve it.
Instead, Kerry urged her audience to keep in mind the true essence of Independence Day while they grill their barbecues and relax on the beach.
Today is all about fireworks and gathering with loved ones, grilling food and experiencing happiness, yet it’s also a time for contemplation. Contemplating our identities and the sort of nation we aspire to be. I really miss you, Mum.
After all, the death of the Kennedy family matriarch truly marked the end of an era.
With deep affection in our hearts, we share the sad news that our extraordinary grandmother, Ethel Kennedy, has passed away. This happened early today due to complications arising from a stroke she experienced last week. – Joe Kennedy III’s post on X, October 10th.
In addition to a life spent advocating for social justice and human rights, our dear mother also leaves behind a large and loving family. This includes nine children, 34 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives who hold her in deep affection.
For a complete guide to the Kennedy family, keep reading.
Joseph Patrick “Joe” Kennedy married Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald on Oct. 7, 1914.
By the year 1932, they had a total of nine children: Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., John F. Kennedy, Rosemary Kennedy, Kathleen Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy, Patricia Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Jean Kennedy, and Edward Kennedy.
Born July 25, 1915, Joe Jr. was going to be president, as far as his father was concerned.
He attended the Democratic National Convention in 1940 and had intentions to seek a position in Congress following his Navy service. However, at the age of 29, he along with his fellow pilot, Wilford John Willy, tragically lost their lives on August 12, 1944, when the explosives they were transporting unexpectedly detonated during a bombing mission known as Operation Aphrodite.
The bodies of the pilots were never found, and their names are engraved on the Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, which commemorates casualties from World War II.
Born on May 29, 1917, it was John who climbed his way up from Congress to the position of U.S. senator before eventually being elected as president in 1960.
On the 12th of September, 1953, he tied the knot with Jacqueline Bouvier. Their union resulted in the birth of their daughter Caroline Kennedy on the 27th of November, 1957, and their son John F. Kennedy Jr. on the 25th of November, 1960.
In 1956, a baby girl named Arabella was tragically stillborn, while Patrick, born three months early on August 7, 1963, survived for just 39 hours.
JFK was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, one of the defining events of the 20th century.
During the Obama administration, Caroline served as the U.S. ambassador to Japan, while she was the U.S. ambassador to Australia during the Biden administration. In 1986, she tied the knot with Edwin “Ed” Schlossberg.
They have children Rose Kennedy Schlossberg (born June 25, 1988), Tatiana Kennedy Schlossberg (born May 5, 1990), and John “Jack” Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg (born Jan. 19, 1993) as their offspring.
TV producer Rose went to Harvard like her mom and married restaurateur Rory McAuliffe in 2022.
Tatiana, a journalist unaware that her 2014 article about a deceased bear in Central Park involved her cousin RFK Jr., graduated from Yale and married her college sweetheart, George Moran, in 2017. They had a son named Edwin Jr. in 2022.
Jack, who studied at both Yale and Harvard (earning a JD/MBA), is known for his entertaining posts on social media. In 2024, he delivered a speech at the Democratic National Convention and currently serves as a political commentator for Vogue magazine.
The man who was titled “People’s Sexiest Man Alive” in 1988 and frequently recognized as one of the most sought-after singles worldwide, tied the knot with Calvin Klein publicist Carolyn Bessette on September 21, 1996, after being a bachelor.
Tragically, John F. Kennedy Jr., who had brought sorrow to his family many times before, met an untimely end at a young age, just like his father did. His life, full of promise, was cut short in a plane crash on July 16, 1999, claiming the lives not only of JFK Jr., but also Carolyn and her sister Lauren Bessette.
Rosemary (at right, with sister Kathleen and mom Rose) was born Sept. 13, 1918.
When Rosemary was at a boarding school designed for students facing learning challenges, she exhibited disruptive behaviors. As a result, when she turned 23, her father opted for a prefrontal lobotomy to be performed on her.
Rosemary exited the experimental treatment, billed as a possible remedy for mental health issues that Joe had high hopes for, in a severely impaired state and was subsequently institutionalized for the remainder of her life until January 7, 2005.
Years later, Rose confided in historian Doris Kearns Goodwin that she had always thought her friend could’ve led the life of a Kennedy woman, at a slightly more leisurely pace. However, she lost everything in just a few short minutes.
Born Feb. 20, 1920, Kathleen got a kick out of life, hence her jaunty nickname.
She got married to William Cavendish, the Marquess of Hartington, in a civil service in London on May 6, 1944, despite her mother’s disapproval because the groom was not Catholic. The only family member who attended the wedding was her brother Joe Jr. due to this reason.
A month later, William, a major in the British Army, was killed by a sniper in Belgium.
She stayed in England and developed feelings for William Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam who was still married. Prior to him obtaining a divorce, they both perished when the plane transporting them to the French Riviera suffered a crash on May 13, 1948.
Eunice was born July 10, 1921.
On May 23, 1953, the passionate benefactor and creator of the Special Olympics exchanged vows with Robert Sargent Shriver Jr.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d say: “I have the privilege of being the parent to five wonderful individuals: Robert ‘Bobby’ Shriver III (born April 28, 1954), Maria Shriver (Nov. 6, 1955), Timothy (Aug. 29, 1959), Mark (Feb. 17, 1964), and Anthony (July 20, 1965).
Eunice passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind 19 grandchildren, among them being Maria’s four children with her former spouse Arnold Schwarzenegger: Katherine (born December 13, 1989), Patrick (September 18, 1993), Christina (July 23, 1991), and Christopher (September 27, 1997).
Known to the nation as Bobby Kennedy, he tied the knot with Ethel Skakel on June 17, 1950.
or
Bobby Kennedy, affectionately recognized across the country, wed Ethel Skakel on June 17, 1950.
or
Bobby Kennedy, a figure well-known throughout the nation, got married to Ethel Skakel on June 17, 1950.
They ended up welcoming a family of eleven: Kathleen, Joseph II, Robert Jr., David, Courtney, Michael, Kerry, Christopher, Maxwell, Douglas and Rory.
Ethel was carrying Rory at the time Bobby was tragically killed on June 6, 1968, not long after he had won the California Democratic primary.
David Kennedy passed away due to a drug overdose on the 25th of April, 1984, at the age of 28. Michael Kennedy met an unfortunate end on December 31, 1997, after colliding with a tree while skiing and simultaneously playing catch with a football during a family outing in Aspen, Colorado. Sharing three children together, Michael was 37 years old at the time of his death, married to Victoria Gifford.
Ethel Kennedy lost her spouse when their oldest child was just 16 years old. Despite this tragedy, she became the grandmother of 34. Regrettably, two of her grandchildren have passed away: Saoirse Hill, daughter of Paul Hill and Courtney, in a drug overdose incident at age 22 in 2019, and Maeve Kennedy McKean, daughter of Kathleen and David Townsend, who perished in a canoeing accident in 2020 at the age of 40.
RFK Jr., born Jan. 17, 1954, is a thrice-married father of six.
He has a son, Robert Francis “Bobby” Kennedy III (born in 1984), and a daughter, Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy (born in 1988), with his first spouse named Emily Black.
They divorced in 1994 after 12 years of marriage.
RFK III has been married to CIA analyst turned author and TV host Amaryllis Fox since 2017.
They have a child named Bobby (born January 7, 2019) and another child called Cassius Watts Thoreau Kennedy (born August 30, 2021), while Amaryllis also has a daughter named Zoë from a past relationship.
Back in 2012, I shared with Town & Country that I firmly believe life boils down to a kaleidoscope of moments – some sweet, some sour – and the richer this tapestry, the more fulfilling it becomes for me.
In August 2024, Ben Affleck becoming a topic of conversation, as one source described it, propelled Kick Kennedy to the peak of trending topics just days after Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from him.
Affleck’s representatives swiftly dismissed rumors of a romantic involvement, clarifying to TopMob News that everything concerning him and Kick is false.
So nothing about being a Kennedy had really changed in a decade. Or a century.
In an interview with T&C, she shared, “Often people ask me, ‘What’s it like to be a Kennedy?’ To which I reply, it feels like the water temperature might differ for us, but honestly, I can’t tell you. When I see my image or name in the tabloids, a knot forms in my stomach. It’s not me; it’s reading something that’s not authentic.
However, she shared a strong family resemblance, in spirit if not physically, with the aunt who passed away two years prior to her father’s birth.
“It’s funny how similar we are,” Kick mused. “She was fun and social and a performer in many ways.”
In the year 1994, RFK Jr. tied the knot with Mary Richardson, and together they welcomed four beautiful children into their family: Conor Richardson Kennedy (born on July 25), Kyra LeMoyne Kennedy (August 22), William Finbar “Finn” Kennedy (November 8), and Aidan Caohman Vieques Kennedy (July 13, 2001).
The couple were legally separated when Mary died by suicide in 2012.
Father and sons: Conor, Aidan and RFK III.
Conor has kept a relatively quiet public life, except for his notable activism and achievements, following his sudden rise to fame at age 18 when he brought Taylor Swift home to introduce her to his family.
The brief romantic episode they shared didn’t last long, yet Conor later graduated from Georgetown Law School. However, their time together created quite a stir in the news.
“Taylor Swift’s ex Conor Kennedy” is now engaged to singer Giulia Be.
Kyra, a regular among the high-fashion set, lives in Milan.
In a video published on August 27, 2024, in collaboration with Elle and Bvlgari, she mentioned that she is currently engaged in a tribute project for her deceased mother.
She wonders if she has gone through a transformation in her life. To which I can confirm, yes, there has been a significant change. As a child, I was quite different from who I am now as a grown-up, undergoing a complete turnaround.
RFK Jr. married Curb Your Enthusiasm star Cheryl Hines in 2014.
The actress shares daughter Catherine Young (born March 8, 2004) with ex-husband Paul Young.
On Instagram in 2018, Kick expressed her appreciation for Father’s Day by saying, “Thanks for bringing these fun and quirky siblings into my life!
Ethel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have a son who has three daughters – twin girls Mariah Kennedy-Cuomo and Cara Kennedy-Cuomo (born in 1995), and Michaela Kennedy-Cuomo (born in 1997) – with his former spouse Andrew Cuomo.
As a lifestyle advisor, I’d put it this way: Back in 1990, I, much like Kerry and Andrew, embarked on the journey of marriage. They were public figures, with Andrew serving as governor of New York from 2011 to 2021. However, our paths diverged after 13 years together, separating in 2003 before officially parting ways in a divorce in 2005.
Senator Ted Kennedy, who was more scandalous than about 90% of his family combined, had three children with his first wife Joan Bennett: Kara Kennedy (born February 27, 1960), Edward Kennedy Jr. (Septemer 26, 1961) and Patrick Kennedy II (July 14, 1967).
This version maintains the original information but uses simpler language to make it more accessible and easier to read for a general audience.
He and Joan divorced in 1982 after 24 years of marriage and he wed Victoria Reggie in 1992.
Kara suffered a fatal heart attack on Sept. 16, 2011, two years after her father died.
