Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, discusses the ongoing challenges faced by the long-awaited reboot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Blade’. In a conversation with multiple media outlets, he shed light on the reasons behind the project’s delay. Confirming Mahershala Ali’s continued involvement in the film, Feige playfully attributed the hold-up to Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ making use of costumes initially intended for ‘Blade’. Later, Feige was open about Marvel’s market saturation with new projects and its potential detrimental effects on the franchise. He also expressed his desire for the ‘Blade’ storyline to surpass typical expectations.
Kevin Feige, in an interview with Variety, admitted that after spending 12 years developing the Infinity Saga, they had often thought, “That’s something that will never happen to us,” referring to the potential over-extension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with numerous films and TV series. He explained that there were always more characters that fans wanted to see than they could realistically produce due to their decision not to release a movie every month, which he considered impractical. However, when faced with the need to create more content, Feige acknowledged, “Well, we do have more,” but admitted that perhaps they had stumbled into this situation.
Speaking about the character of Blade, Feige underlined the significance of crafting a standout script. He explained that they didn’t want to create a mere imitation with a leather outfit and vampire slaying; it needed to be distinctive. This was during a period when they were becoming more selective, choosing only projects that were “insanely great”. However, at the time, it wasn’t quite up to that standard yet.
Fans who follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are well-acquainted with the storyline surrounding the reboot of the character Blade. Initially announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 with great excitement, the film has experienced a series of changes in writers, directors, and even cast members like Delroy Lindo. In October 2024, Disney removed Blade from its release calendar as Marvel works diligently to finalize the movie. The ongoing delays have caused discontent among many, including renowned MCU actor Michael B. Jordan himself.
During the public interviews for the upcoming movie “Jurassic World Rebirth” this summer, Ali gave an update on the status of “Blade,” but his comments didn’t seem to suggest that the film is imminent. When inquired about the progress of “Blade,” Ali suggested that fans should contact Marvel Studios and let them know he’s ready to join the project. He also avoided discussing his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a video session with co-stars Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson, jokingly stating that questions about this topic are more suitable for Scarlett.
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) came into existence, Blade starring Wesley Snipes as the Daywalker led a trilogy of films. Given its prior success on the big screen, many are surprised it’s taken so long for Marvel Studios to develop a new version. With their track record of rebooting characters like Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and working on a fresh X-Men film, they have ample experience in breathing life into familiar titles that audiences love. Although it seems challenging to create a new Blade, Feige’s reasoning behind this delay is reasonable. In today’s climate of decreased box office revenues for the MCU, simply being another Marvel film isn’t enough. Instead, Feige aims to craft a script filled with something extraordinary that will captivate viewers and be worthy of Mahershala Ali’s Academy Award-winning skills.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but fantasize about a fresh take on Blade that involves him battling vampires with style in a sleek leather trench coat – it’s the dream for many! But, Feige aims to make this reboot more than just another action-packed flick. Marvel has always been successful at creating characters that audiences love, and the secret lies in crafting a gripping and entertaining narrative around them. With an actor as talented as Ali leading the charge on Blade, there’s a lot riding on its success. Fingers crossed that once the dust settles after Avengers: Secret Wars, we’ll get to see Blade come alive again!
