I’ve always been fascinated by the making of Marvel movies, and I recently learned about a really smart decision Kevin Feige made during the production of Spider-Man: Brand New Day – it sounds like it really helped the film come together! Now, with Spider-Man 4 on the horizon, I’m incredibly excited – it’s been too long since we’ve seen Tom Holland as Peter Parker in the MCU. Especially after the huge events of No Way Home, it feels like they’re going to do something really different with the character, and I understand they’ve even brought in a new director to help make that happen. It’s a bold move, and I can’t wait to see where they take Spider-Man next!
Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, was chosen to direct the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. Early reports suggested this new film would be a darker take on the Spider-Man story, differing from what fans expect. Cretton’s involvement also hinted at more action, similar to the exciting sequences in Shang-Chi. However, recent information indicates that the studio initially considered someone else to direct Spider-Man 4.
According to entertainment news source My Time to Shine, Sony Pictures’ Tom Rothman originally hoped to have Jon Watts – who directed the Home trilogy – direct Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but the plans didn’t work out.
The report revealed that Rothman briefly considered Ruben Fleischer, the director of Venom, to helm the film. However, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, decided against it, and Destin Daniel Cretton was ultimately chosen as the director.

Although Sony’s 2018 film Venom made a lot of money, it received mixed reviews. Kevin Feige’s choice not to work with director Ruben Fleischer might have actually been a good thing for the future of Spider-Man, potentially preserving the success built by the Home trilogy. If Sony had chosen Fleischer, it could have signaled they wanted more control over the creative direction of Spider-Man 4.
Cretton’s work on Spider-Man: Brand New Day is heading in a promising direction. Rumors suggest a significant prison fight is planned, potentially making this arc stand out. Featuring a large number of villains could also mean Peter Parker will face his greatest challenges yet.
Destin Daniel Cretton directs the upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which follows Peter Parker as he navigates life as a local hero, facing fresh challenges and teaming up with surprising new friends. The movie features Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo, and Michael Mando. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
Why Kevin Feige’s Big Decision Proves He Knows How to Elevate Spider-Man

When Kevin Feige turned down a suggestion from Tom Rothman to have Ruben Fleischer direct the next Spider-Man movie, it showed just how much control Feige has over the character’s creative direction – which is promising for the future of Spider-Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The report showed Feige has a clear vision for how Destin Daniel Cretton will develop Spider-Man’s story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how that story will connect to the larger multiverse saga, ultimately building towards the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films.
Destin Daniel Cretton proved he can launch a new hero with Shang-Chi, so he could really elevate an already popular character like Spider-Man with his directing skills.
Feige didn’t just manage to continue the Spider-Man story; he also ensured that one of Marvel’s key characters successfully moved from a fantastic three-movie arc into a new, ongoing role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
