Ellen Pompeo, known for her nearly two-decade-long role on Grey’s Anatomy, will star in a new British drama series called The Only Suspect on ITV. News of her casting was confirmed by several sources on April 22nd, shortly after she announced her departure from the medical drama.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m always fascinated by stories that explore how the past can resurface. This new thriller centers around Alex, a man living a seemingly idyllic life in London with his partner, Beth. But everything is threatened when a secret he’s kept buried for thirty years – literally, he buried a body! – starts to come to light. It’s a gripping premise, and I think audiences will be hooked to see how he navigates this situation.
The show’s summary explained that the old railway line behind Alex and Beth’s street – where a body was found hidden – is being turned into a walking path. While this seems like a positive change for the community, it actually puts Alex in danger, as he’s the one who buried the body.
After living in hiding for decades under a false identity, Alex’s new life is falling apart. With construction about to begin on the place where his secret is hidden, he’s forced to confront how much he’ll risk to protect it.
Scottish actor McKidd described his new role as a ‘coming home’ after twenty years on the set of Grey’s Anatomy in Los Angeles. He also stated that he’s eager to play the complex character of Alex, finding the role ‘exciting to explore’.
This is Kevin McKidd’s first project since revealing he’s leaving his role as Dr. Owen Hunt on Grey’s Anatomy after the season 22 finale airs on May 7th.

In a statement released on March 25, the 52-year-old actor shared that Grey’s Anatomy has been a significant part of their life, both professionally and personally, and they are thankful for everything the show has offered. Joining the series in 2008 during its fifth season, they expressed that playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing episodes have been incredibly formative experiences, and they’ve greatly valued working with a talented team.
McKidd also shared love and gratitude to the series’ original showrunner Shonda Rhimes.
He expressed excitement about the future, saying he’s eager to create new projects, share fresh stories, and apply his experience as he moves forward in his career.
McKidd isn’t the only one who’s unexpectedly left a popular TV show. Here’s a look at other surprising departures from hit series.

In a March 2026 episode, the crime drama said farewell to Director Leon Vance, portrayed by Rocky Carroll, after 18 years with the character who first appeared in season five. The 500th episode featured Vance’s death in a shootout with a dishonest agent, and a touching scene where he was greeted in heaven by the late Chief Medical Examiner, Donald “Ducky” Mallard, played by Adam Campbell.

Okay, so the news is officially out! I’m so excited to share that I’m joining Season 16 of RHONY as a ‘friend of.’ Honestly, when they asked me to be part of the show, we had a really open conversation. My personal life isn’t something I typically share publicly, and we both agreed that keeping it that way felt right. I’m thrilled to be joining the ladies and can’t wait for you all to see what happens!
The fashion icon—who joined the Bravo series for season 14 in 2022—explained that she later realized being a supporting castmember wasn’t for her.
After a lot of consideration, I’ve decided it’s time for me to move on from the show. I realized I’d be the oldest cast member and the only openly gay woman, and honestly, I think that creates a chance for some fresh energy and new perspectives to come through. I’m excited to see what happens next!

In November, Chrishell shared on social media that she no longer needs the show for income. She explained that she’s fortunate to have other work and that continuing with the show was negatively affecting her mental well-being.

Jax Taylor has said he won’t be back for season three of The Valley. This decision comes after many viewers expressed concerns about his actions during the show’s second season.
I was really touched by what Jax said in July 2025. He explained that right now, he needs to prioritize getting and staying sober, working on his mental wellbeing, and being a good coparent with Brittany, especially with everything going on with their divorce. He feels like taking this time to focus on himself is crucial, not just for his own happiness, but so he can be the best dad possible to little Cruz. It’s good to see him putting his family and his health first.

The actress shared on Instagram on July 10th how honored she was to play Dr. Heather Collins in what she called a truly innovative season of the show. She also expressed gratitude to viewers for watching, supporting the first season, and sharing their personal experiences with her.

As a huge fan of the show, even knowing the source material – the game The Last of Us Part II – hinted at Joel’s fate, and that his death in the game happened similarly, I was still completely shocked when it actually happened on screen. It was brutal and really got to me, even though I thought I was prepared.
Pascal, known for dying in roles on shows like Game of Thrones and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, wasn’t surprised by his character’s fate. He jokingly told Entertainment Weekly that he’s used to it – “I like to die!”

Following what he called a “wild adventure,” Peter Krause finished his run as Captain Bobby Nash on the drama 9-1-1 with an episode airing in April 2025.

After over a year of speculation, Kevin Costner confirmed in June 2024 that he won’t be returning for the final season of the popular Paramount drama, following his departure after four and a half seasons.

In February 2023, Ellen Pompeo finished her run as Meredith Grey on the ABC drama after playing the character for 19 years.
Pompeo said on The Drew Barrymore Show in December 2022 that she needed to try new things. She’s 53, and feels like her brain needs a refresh. While she did return for a guest appearance in May and continues to narrate the show, she explained that you can’t just do the same thing every day – like the New York Times crossword puzzle.
But she’s not gone for good. Pompeo still pops in and out of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always keeping up with what’s happening in entertainment, and a big story just broke! Henry Cavill, known for his roles in films like Batman vs. Superman, has decided to leave The Witcher after season three. Don’t worry though, the show will continue – Liam Hemsworth is stepping in to play Geralt, starting with season four and likely beyond. It’s a big change, but exciting to see where the story goes with a new lead!

Ruby Rose first appeared as Batwoman (Kate Kane) in a 2018 Arrowverse event and then led the CW’s Batwoman series for one season. This was a historic moment, as her character came out as lesbian, making her the first openly gay superhero to star in her own show. However, Rose announced her departure from the series just two days after the first season finale in 2020. In season two, Javicia Leslie took over the role, playing a new character named Ryan Wilder who becomes the new Batwoman.
Later on in season two, Kate got a bit of a face swap and returned played by Wallis Day.

America Ferrera left the show Superstore after its fifth season in 2020, which meant both a change for the Cloud 9 store on the show and a loss of a main character. Though she made a brief appearance in the first two episodes of season six due to pandemic-related delays, she ultimately returned for the series finale after the show was cancelled, allowing her character, Amy, and Jonah (Ben Feldman) to get a satisfying conclusion to their story.

As a longtime fan of The Magicians, I remember being really moved by the season four finale. Jason Ralph, who played Quentin, successfully completed his mission to save Eliot, portrayed by Hale Appleman, but it came at a huge cost – his character’s life. Now, the show does deal with death – it’s a core part of the story – but it was a real surprise when Jason didn’t return for the fifth and final season. It definitely left a mark on the show’s conclusion.

Ahead of the final season, Arrow‘s Emily Bett Rickards announced her exit in a poem of sorts.
Felicity and I are very close, but after the seventh episode, we’ll be leaving the show,” she wrote.

Following Danai Gurira’s co-star Cohan and Andrew Lincoln’s departures from the show, Gurira also left the zombie series. She joined the AMC show in its third season as the skilled swordswoman Michonne and appeared for the last time in an episode that aired in March 2020.
