After his overdose in October 2015, Lamar Odom learned he had experienced twelve strokes and six heart attacks.
As the former NBA player explained in the new Netflix documentary Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom, it was anything but ordinary.
Even though Khloe Kardashian had filed for divorce from him in December 2013 – after four years of marriage – she stepped in to manage his medical care when he became ill and paused their divorce proceedings.
Khloe explained in the documentary that she stayed at the hospital for around four months, being with him constantly. They were both committed to helping him regain his ability to walk and move.
Lamar was found unconscious at the Love Ranch brothel near Crystal, Nevada, on October 13, 2015, and taken to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. He spent three days in a coma before briefly waking up—Khloe remembers him saying, “Hey, baby,” before falling back asleep—and was then transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He continued his recovery there until early January, when he moved to a private rehab facility.
Lamar believes it was likely more difficult for Khloe during that time, explaining he felt unable to express gratitude or affection – he wouldn’t even allow himself to cry.
When he was ready to leave, Khloe realized he hadn’t decided where he would live. She stepped in and took care of it, finding him a house near her in Calabasas, California, and arranging for someone to look after him and cook his meals.
“We were going to rehabilitate him,” she explained.

However, that plan fell apart in May 2016 when she visited and found Lamar using drugs once more.
Khloe explained that once you’ve smelled crack cocaine, you’ll never forget it. She described it as a uniquely awful and unmistakable odor.
At that moment, she remembered deciding to be as quiet and discreet as possible and to observe what the man was doing.
She continued, recalling how she’d carefully crept upstairs. She found him in his bedroom, sitting on the bed and smoking crack. Without thinking, she punched him. ‘I put my entire life on hold to help you,’ she said, furious. ‘How did this happen? You don’t even have a phone, you can’t communicate with anyone!’
Khloe revealed that Lamar actually had a phone, which made her realize he was deceiving her. She explained he was manipulating her to maintain a certain lifestyle for himself. Angered, Khloe told him he had to move out by Monday, stating she would no longer support him financially or want any further contact with him.
She refiled for divorce and it was finalized in December 2016.

It had been nine years since they last saw each other. When they finally reunited, as shown on The Kardashians, Khloe – now a mom to 7-year-old True and 3-year-old Tatum with her ex, Tristan Thompson – revealed that she punched him and broke things after she discovered he had relapsed.
Lamar stated he couldn’t recall the details of what happened, but acknowledged it was wrong, saying, “That shouldn’t have happened.”
In the Netflix documentary, the 46-year-old questioned the logic behind giving Lamar Odom cocaine, especially considering what he had already been through. He found the idea deeply disturbing, asking why anyone would do something like that.
Keep reading to find out all the shocking details Khloe Kardashian shared about her marriage, and other surprising stories from the documentary Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom.

Khloe and Lamar first met in 2009 at a party Khloe hosted. The party was thrown by Lamar’s Los Angeles Lakers teammate, Ron Artest, who later changed his name to Metta World Peace.
Let me tell you, before that party, Lamar Odom was a total stranger to me! I shared this in the Netflix documentary Untold, specifically the episode about his life. Honestly, I think I only said yes to the event because my brother, Rob – he’s a huge Lakers fan – was absolutely thrilled about it. He really talked me into it!
Lamar, recently crowned a champion with the Lakers, revealed in the documentary that he initially didn’t recognize Khloe. He admitted that he was attracted to her right away, saying he tried to initiate something with her on their first night, but she wasn’t interested. They eventually connected the next day, and their connection continued from there.
Just weeks after meeting, he proposed with a nine-carat diamond ring. They were married on September 27, 2009, only a month after their first encounter.
I’m usually pretty rational,” Khloe shared. “But I get why people were so quick to question our relationship and whether it was genuine. We were planning a wedding in just a month – that’s really fast!”
As Lamar put it, “You gotta have a gut feeling” and “some big balls.”

Lamar and his former fiancée, Liza Morales, have two children together: a daughter named Destiny Odom and a son, Lamar “L.J.” Odom Jr. They were high school sweethearts in Queens, New York, but their relationship ended after the tragic loss of their 6-month-old son, Jayden, who died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) on June 29, 2006.
In her memoir, Untold, Liza remembered being shocked when Lamar texted her about his marriage to Khloe, initially believing he was joking.
Lamar explained in his statement that people attempted to discourage him from getting married. He also said the mother of his children prevented their attendance at his wedding.
L.J. later enjoyed receiving Christmas presents from Khloe and her mother, Kris Jenner. However, at the time, he admitted he hadn’t even met Kris and didn’t think his father had told him he was marrying her, as he revealed in the documentary.
Destiny, who is 27, explained in the document that if someone wants a big wedding with lots of guests and cameras, that’s perfectly fine and their choice.

As a lifestyle expert, I remember when Khloe & Lamar first hit our screens on April 10, 2011! It felt like a perfect extension of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, which was already a huge success. We’d already seen Khloe and Kourtney team up for Khloe & Kourtney Take Miami, and Kourtney and Kim explore Kourtney & Kim Take New York, so Khloe & Lamar felt like a natural fit.
But that was not Khloe’s idea, according to the now 41-year-old.
According to the documentary, the show Khloe & Lamar was largely driven by Lamar. Khloe felt stretched too thin at the time and was worried about damaging the family’s reputation, which was built around Keeping Up with the Kardashians. She pointed out that there were already many Kardashian shows on television and reminded Lamar about his priority – his basketball career with the Lakers – questioning if he really wanted to pursue another show.
Khloé explained that filming Keeping Up With The Kardashians let her move around and avoid constant public attention. She was initially a bit worried about a new show being filmed in their home constantly, but she also wanted to support her partner, who was very enthusiastic about the project.
Destiny said of her dad, “He did love Khloe, but he’d wanted to be on reality TV for a long time.”
As Lamar explained in the document, he agreed to participate if he could also benefit, stating, ‘If I’m going to marry you, I want a share of everything too.’

Liza remembered in the documentary that after the Lakers won their second consecutive NBA championship in 2010, her children skipped school to go to the celebratory parade in downtown Los Angeles.
When they arrived at his home, they received a call saying their father wasn’t responding, even though they knew he was inside.
“We were knocking on the door and there was nothing,” Destiny said, “it was just silence.”
Liza mentioned that Lamar’s friend called, explaining he wasn’t feeling up to attending the parade after a night out and didn’t want his kids to see him that way. Despite this, his trainer insisted he participate, and his children ultimately watched him from home on television.
Liza shared that they were heartbroken. Destiny explained that being rejected by a parent is incredibly painful and can really hinder someone’s growth. She added that some moments like these stay with you forever, and she’d recently learned the reason behind his behavior – he was struggling with partying and substance use.

Khloe admitted that, surprisingly, Lamar’s early cocaine use seemed handled responsibly, according to the documentary.
She remembered he went missing about two years after they started, sometime in June. She genuinely feared the worst had happened to him.
Khloe explained that he’d been acting differently because June is the month of Jayden’s death anniversary. She said it was then she realized, ‘This is completely new territory for me – a really difficult situation, and I don’t know how to handle it.’
Lamar, who is now 46, explained in the documentary that he believes he’s forgotten many stories from that period of his life due to his circumstances at the time.
He wondered aloud how someone could even contemplate cheating on their wife. He questioned how anyone could publicly commit to marrying someone on television, only to then be unfaithful.
Khloe remembered the night she found out about Lamar’s infidelity. She’d had her doubts, but hadn’t been able to prove anything until a woman called her with shocking news. The woman bluntly told Khloe, ‘I’m having an affair with your husband. He’s a mess, constantly asking for money and drugs, and I want out. Can you please come get him?’

Khloe remembered that Lamar would sometimes leave rehab – whether for just 12 hours or up to two days – and immediately go on a drug binge. She often found herself desperately searching for him in back alleys and cheap motels. He’d leave behind drug paraphernalia, like pieces of aluminum foil and spoons, scattered everywhere.
She explained she felt obligated to tidy hotel rooms after him, fearing housekeeping staff might leak details to the press. She admitted she didn’t realize she was enabling his behavior at the time, but felt a strong need to keep everything under control and shield him from the consequences.
Lamar’s drug use became extremely heavy after he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in December 2011, according to her.

The following summer, Lamar returned to the L.A. Clippers, the team that originally drafted him in 1999.
Following the end of the 2012-2013 season, he relapsed into drug use, and it became very serious. Khloe shared that he overdosed multiple times, and she even had to pump his stomach at home. They tried to handle everything privately, setting up makeshift detox centers and doing everything they could to help him.

Khloe told Lamar he had a choice: get three months of rehab, or she would file for divorce. An intervention specialist advised her to deliver this ultimatum.
Khloe remembered people telling her he would never admit he wanted a divorce. During an intervention, after she spoke, he surprisingly said he just wanted his passport and then, ‘Let’s get this divorce done.’
In the documentary, Lamar explained that right after he finalized his divorce in 2015, he was determined to return to using drugs, but was immediately frustrated by not having any cocaine.
Living in Las Vegas at the time, he ended up at the Love Ranch, a legal brothel in Crystal, Nev.
Lamar pointed out how remarkable it is that even a small choice can have a huge impact, not just on your own life, but on the lives of those you care about most.

On October 13, 2015, Lamar was discovered unconscious at the Love Ranch. According to the Nye County sheriff, witnesses reported he had used cocaine in the days leading up to the incident, and had taken ten doses of an erectile dysfunction drug since arriving at the ranch.
Before the release of Untold, Lamar explained to Sports Illustrated that although drugs were later found in his system, he hadn’t yet established a source for cocaine in Las Vegas and hadn’t used any that particular day or night.
In an interview with USA Today, he firmly denied bringing cocaine to the brothel. He explained he was upset after signing his divorce papers and had briefly imagined going to the brothel with drugs, but that didn’t happen. He stated, “I didn’t have any cocaine to take to the brothel that day. And I was kind of heated that I just signed these divorce papers and I thought I was going to live out a young addict mind’s dream and go to this brothel with some cocaine…And that just wasn’t the case.”

Khloe said she distinctly remembers just screaming when her sister, Kim Kardashian, told her that Lamar had overdosed.
When Khloe arrived at the hospital, she said Lamar’s father, Joe Odom, who passed away in 2021, was preparing to remove him from life support. Khloe told him, ‘I’m still his wife, so what do you need?’ Joe asked for a pair of Nike shoes, $100, and a hotel room for the night. He took what she gave him and never returned.
Honestly, I just felt so strongly that I needed to do absolutely everything possible to help him win. I really had to rely on my own instincts, you know? I trusted my gut more than anyone around him, even his own team. It was like, I just knew what he needed, and I had to follow my own lead.
She started requiring advance permission for all visitors, essentially controlling who was allowed to see them.

Lamar was airlifted from Las Vegas to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and Khloe stayed at the hospital constantly, as she shared in her show, Untold. She was there with him for roughly four months, every single day.
After Lamar was released from the hospital in 2016, Khloe rented a house near hers for him and arranged for caregivers to look after him.
According to the court documents, Khloe said she walked in one day and immediately smelled crack cocaine. She found him smoking it in the bedroom, and she reacted by punching him in the face.
She explained that he’d gotten a phone and seemed to be doing surprisingly well, but she realized he was manipulating her to keep supporting him. She told him he needed to move out by Monday, that she wouldn’t pay for anything else, and that she didn’t want any further contact with him.
When Lamar and Khloe reunited in late 2024 after nine years apart, he told her he didn’t recall the events of the past, but also acknowledged that doesn’t mean they didn’t happen.
He used strong language to express his shock and anger that someone would offer him cocaine, considering his recent experiences.
“I can depend on my family,” he reflected, “but most people leave you to f–king rot in the wind.”
