When Kill Bill: Volume 1 hit theaters in 2003, it boldly mixed influences from samurai films, spaghetti westerns, and low-budget action movies. The film, starring Uma Thurman as The Bride, followed her intense quest for revenge, a story continued six months later in Kill Bill: Volume 2. The two films quickly became iconic and a highlight of Quentin Tarantino’s career. However, for years, fans have known that Tarantino originally envisioned the story as one complete film. This longer version, called Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, has remained a rare find, shown only at a few film festivals and in Tarantino’s own theaters. Now, the complete version of this revenge story is finally getting a wider release in commercial theaters.
Lionsgate just dropped the first trailer for Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, giving fans a preview of the newly restored and action-packed film. The trailer highlights the complete story of The Bride’s revenge, blending the intense sword fights from the first part with the more thoughtful ending of the second.
As a huge film fan, I’m thrilled to hear they’re finally presenting this movie the way it was originally envisioned! They’ve created a brand new animated sequence to seamlessly connect the two halves of the story. The whole experience is going to be quite a commitment at 271 minutes – including a 15-minute break to catch your breath – but I’m ready to completely lose myself in Tarantino’s universe for that long.
The Whole Bloody Affair Is the Kill Bill Version Tarantino Originally Conceived

The decision to release Kill Bill in two parts was mainly a business decision. The original cut was over four hours long, so the studio decided to split it into two films released six months apart. Although both movies were successful with critics and audiences, this split created an unnatural cliffhanger at the end of Volume 1 – something Quentin Tarantino hadn’t originally planned. Tarantino has always considered Kill Bill to be a single film, and he’s excited that fans can now experience it that way. He believes the best way to watch Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is on the big screen, ideally in 70mm or 35mm, to fully appreciate its impact.
Even though it was released in two parts, Kill Bill remains one of Quentin Tarantino’s most creative and original films. It brilliantly blends different genres, features memorable characters, and includes instantly recognizable scenes, showcasing Tarantino at his best. Seeing the complete, original version of the film on the big screen is a must-see for fans.
Removing the six-month time jump and the resulting story pause creates a smoother, more emotionally connected film experience. Getting rid of the cliffhanger also lets the story build steadily towards its powerful and moving ending, without any interruptions. This cut of the film hasn’t been shown often – it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 and has occasionally been screened at theaters owned by Quentin Tarantino – and remains largely unknown to most viewers.
Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair will be released on December 5th.
