King of the Hill: Man Indicted For Murder of John Redcorn Voice Actor, Jonathan Joss

The fourteenth season of King of the Hill proved very popular on Hulu, reviving the animated series after it initially ended years ago. Hulu quickly renewed the show for three more seasons. However, the comeback was bittersweet due to the tragic death of Jonathan Joss, the voice actor who played John Redcorn. Joss was fatally shot in public by Sigredo Ceja Alvarez, who has since been indicted.

A Texas grand jury indicted 57-year-old Ceja Alvarez this week, on November 17th, for the death of the voice actor from the show King of the Hill. The incident happened on June 1st, and Alvarez claims he acted in self-defense, which will be his defense in court. His lawyer stated on June 24th that Alvarez had been provoked and that Texas law allows people to defend themselves and others, a claim they intend to pursue in this case.

It’s just heartbreaking. My husband, Joss, was the victim of a hate crime, and it’s devastating to share that the attack was specifically because of who he was – because he was gay. In his final moments, I wanted him to know he wasn’t alone, so I told him I loved him. Even through everything, he looked at me and I know he heard me. I just kept trying to comfort him, telling him it was okay to let go, to find peace. The pain is unbearable, especially knowing that we were targeted with hateful slurs, even as he was dying. I remember being called those names while simply sitting with him, enjoying lunch, and then again as I held him in his final moments. It’s something I’ll never forget.

King of the Hill’s Future

Now that King of the Hill is coming back for three more seasons, it’s unclear what will happen with the character John Redcorn. The show had to adjust after the passing of Johnny Hardwick, who voiced Dale Gribble, and Toby Huss has taken over the role. As of now, the creators, Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, haven’t said whether they’ll recast Redcorn or if the character will be written out of the show.

As a longtime viewer of King of the Hill, I noticed Redcorn is still a fixture in Arlen, Texas – he even started a business with Hank and Peggy called, amusingly, “John Redcorn’s Redcorn.” It was sad to hear about the passing of Jonathan Joss, the voice of Redcorn, earlier this year. Mike Judge shared that Jonathan brought the character to life for over a dozen seasons, including the upcoming revival, and his voice will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
