In the fresh revival season of “King of the Hill” now streaming on Hulu, Toby Huss’ voice is noticeably absent as Kahn Souphanousinphone. Previous voice actor for the character, Toby Huss, has acknowledged this shift with the arrival of new episodes. The original voice cast largely returns for the revival, but there have been alterations in many characters to suit this new phase of the animated sitcom, and Huss’ roles are one of those that have changed significantly since the series’ early days.
As King of the Hill entered its Season 14, it was revealed that Ronnie Chieng would be taking over as the voice for Kahn. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Huss expressed his feelings about this transition, appreciating that the creative team is now questioning and evolving the production methods of the series, something that wasn’t as common when the show was first produced in the 1990s. Overall, he embraced the change.
King of the Hill Star Reacts to Recast Character
Huss noted that it’s significant we’re asking these questions now in our culture, unlike back in ’97. Although they may have been asked before, they weren’t as prominent. Today, they are, and Huss believes this is a positive development for society and culture. He thinks it’s better to ask tough questions, seek answers, and make adjustments if necessary.
In other news, since Johnny Hardwick’s passing, Huss has taken on the role of Dale Gribble’s voice in the series. Speaking about this transition, Huss shared that he did a single read-through where he portrayed Dale in the room, and the team decided that he was close enough to continue with the role. This decision, according to Huss, was both a sweet and humbling moment for him.
In the revival of the show, even Kahn isn’t the only character to undergo a recast. As Saladin K. Patternson discussed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the changes in the voice cast, he noted that the world has evolved since Hank and Peggy were last seen, and so has the casting. The actors now match the characters they are portraying better than before.
More Changes Made in King of the Hill Season 14

For Season 14 of “King of the Hill”, some characters have been re-voiced. Ted Wassanasong, originally played by Toby Huss, is now voiced by Kenneth Choi. His son Chane (previously voiced by Pamela Adlon, who reprises her role as the grown-up Bobby), is now voiced by Ki Hong Lee. Also, Tai Leclaire takes over the role of the older Joseph Gribble from Breckin Meyer, who was in the original series.
In the updated lineup, we have Keith David joining as Brian Robertson, Anthony “Citric” Campos stepping in as Emilio, among others. The voice cast has been refreshed for this new phase, but veterans like Kathy Najimy, Stephen Root, Lauren Tom, and more are back too, along with Johnny Hardwick and Jonathan Joss’ last performances before they passed away.
