A translator for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Max H, says they were unexpectedly fired by Warhorse Studios, who apparently plan to use AI for all future translations.
Over the past year, many major game studios have increasingly turned to AI, as seen in games like Crimson Desert and Call of Duty. Despite recent debates and budget cuts within the industry, this trend doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon.
Besides the significant environmental impact, a major concern with AI is its tendency to replace skilled workers, often to cut costs. This recently happened to a translator who spent almost four years working on the game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Translator Fired By Warhorse And Being Replaced By AI
“You Can Be Damn Sure I Won’t Keep Quiet About My Experience”
A verified translator and editor who worked on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and its expansions for almost four years recently shared a detailed post on the game’s subreddit. Max H, as they’re known, contributed to many aspects of the English version, including dialogue, quest descriptions, item names, and marketing materials. They joke that anyone who’s played the game in English has probably encountered their work.
Warhorse Studios unexpectedly fired Max H yesterday, despite his significant work on the upcoming game Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and possible involvement in a new project. The studio stated the decision was to improve efficiency and cut costs, and they now intend to use AI for all future translations.
The game The Alters recently had an issue where a ChatGPT prompt was accidentally included in its Portuguese translation, demonstrating how easily such mistakes can happen.
Max H was very surprised by the news, even though the possibility of using AI for translation had been discussed often before. After working at Warhorse Studios for nearly four years, he feels deeply let down by their decision. While he’s bound by a non-disclosure agreement, Max intends to share his experience publicly.
Hi, just wanted to share that the increasing use of AI is having a big impact on people in the gaming industry and beyond. We at [Company Name] really value our employees and are committed to responsible practices, including environmental sustainability. – Max H
Given the huge success of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and the positive reception of its story – a story Max H would have significantly contributed to as an English translator – it’s disappointing to see the studio so quickly embracing AI. However, it’s not entirely unexpected, considering director Daniel Vavra recently stated that opposition won’t stop the release of DLSS 5.
