Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 drove me to madness until I started to embrace its world, not fight it – learn from my mistakes

I’m completely hooked on Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 – it’s easily my favorite game of 2025. I’ve played all the downloadable content, explored almost everything the game has to offer, and spent so much time crafting that I can still hear the sound of hammering in my sleep! But it wasn’t always this way. Being new to the series, I was dropped into a complex world with tons of rules I didn’t understand. I started as a lowly peasant, injured and with poor skills, and was expected to climb the social ladder through sheer willpower. It was brutally difficult, but I didn’t realize the game was subtly guiding me towards opportunities to improve my situation.

How to get started

The world in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is massive, and I knew I couldn’t really explore it without a horse. Unfortunately, I didn’t have one, or even a good pair of shoes! Traveling on foot without weapons was risky – bandits were everywhere, though I wasn’t carrying much worth stealing. Desperate for a way to get around, I risked all my money on the dice game, only to lose it all to a suspicious player who kept protesting he wasn’t cheating, even when I didn’t accuse him of it.

Things hadn’t suddenly gone wrong; I’d been struggling from the start. My first encounter with bandits, during the game’s opening, was a complete mess – lots of clumsy fighting, head injuries, and desperate pleas for mercy. Maybe it was because I’d chosen a character build focused on knowledge (‘Adviser’) which was good for trivia, but definitely not helping me with sword fighting.

It became clear I needed a new approach. I spent too much time figuring out what to do first in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and how to avoid losing progress. I realized playing it like a typical RPG wouldn’t work. It’s more of an immersive sim, so simply fighting your way through like in Skyrim is likely to lead to failure.

Early missions and the opening hours

I decided to live a normal life in the game, and it actually had benefits. When you get the chance to train as either a blacksmith or a miller, the best option is to learn from both. Surprisingly, they each teach really helpful skills. I didn’t expect the bakers to teach me how to sneak up on enemies and kill them quietly, but they’re surprisingly good at it! And learning blacksmithing turned out to be a great way to earn money. When I found the legendary Axe from the Lake, I was able to repair and sharpen it thanks to my blacksmithing skills.

After getting comfortable with the basic gameplay, I started taking on bigger challenges. My equipment wasn’t top-of-the-line, but I had decent weapons and enough armor to survive a few hits. Luckily, I’d also learned how to make Marigold Decoctions – powerful healing potions – by helping the local alchemist. This meant I could run from enemies, quickly heal myself, and then fight back with renewed strength.

Finding a good balance between living a normal life and being a daring adventurer really paid off. Eventually, I was able to focus entirely on exploring and completing quests in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, revisiting old areas to uncover everything they held. I even managed to create a reliable way to earn money, so by the third part of the game, I was quite wealthy.

The best advice for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is to realize you won’t start as a powerful hero. You have to earn that status through gameplay. Trust me, you’ll get there, but success comes to those who are patient as well as brave.
