December feels like the perfect time to announce a movie about Jimmy Stewart, the beloved star of the classic Christmas film, It’s a Wonderful Life. While a biopic is in the works for 2026, I wasn’t thrilled when KJ Apa was chosen to play him.
Look, I was a big fan of KJ Apa in Riverdale, and honestly, I even enjoyed his more recent, playful roles. But when I heard he was taking on a role that required him to be James Stewart, I was skeptical. Could he really pull it off? Then I watched the trailer, and I was floored. His impression of Stewart’s voice is uncanny – it genuinely blew me away.
KJ Apa Absolutely Nailed The Iconic Voice Of Jimmy Stewart
Jimmy Stewart’s voice is so recognizable that any movie about his life would absolutely need an actor who can perfectly imitate it. So, I was worried when I found out an actor not originally from the United States would be trying to capture his unique way of speaking – that distinctive drawl and accent we all remember from films like It’s A Wonderful Life, The Philadelphia Story, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
KJ Apa sometimes had trouble keeping up his American accent as Archie on Riverdale, which occasionally resulted in a slight lisp. But he won’t have that issue in his new movie, Jimmy. Early clips show he perfectly captures the voice of the man he’s portraying, and it’s clear he sounds just like him. Jimmy is scheduled to come out on November 6, 2026.
The show also features a talented cast alongside Jimmy, including Kara Killmer, Neal McDonough, Max Casella, Jason Alexander, and Rob Riggle. Additionally, Jimmy Stewart’s daughter, Kelly Stewart-Harcourt, is one of the show’s executive producers.
What Is Jimmy About?
The upcoming film about Jimmy focuses on key moments in his life, including his early days making classic movies. However, the main story revolves around his time serving in the Army Air Corps, shortly after he won an Oscar for his performance in The Philadelphia Story.
I’ve seen ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ over 30 times, and I was surprised to recently discover it wasn’t initially well-received by critics.
The actor was originally excused from military service because he didn’t weigh enough, but he got in shape with a trainer and then served. During his time in the military, he earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals, and the French Croix de Guerre with a bronze palm.
KJ Apa is set to star as Bradley Nowell in an upcoming film about the band Sublime, marking his second biographical role. If he can convincingly portray Nowell after successfully mimicking Jimmy Stewart’s voice in a previous film and then perform “Santeria” on screen, he might just prove himself as a truly exceptional actor. All joking aside, I’m optimistic about his performance in both roles, especially after seeing the movie’s brief trailer.
Just a reminder, Jimmy will be released in theaters on November 6th. It looks like it’s going to be a great year for biographical movies, with a new film about Michael Jackson also coming soon. I’m really excited to see the Michael Jackson movie, and I’m just as excited about Jimmy.
