Konami Is So Back It’s Even Making an All-New JRPG for PS5

The recent PlayStation State of Play presentation heavily featured Konami, highlighting the company’s return to prominence.

For a while, it seemed like the company prioritized Japanese arcades and pachinko machines over making video games. However, they’ve recently been consistently releasing high-quality titles, like last year’s Silent Hill F and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

During yesterday’s presentation, Sony handed the spotlight to its frequent collaborator, giving them 15 minutes to announce a new Castlevania game and a version of Metal Gear Solid that fans have been eagerly anticipating.

The company also revealed a brand new JRPG called Rev. NOiR, being developed by Nobuki Kadoi, known for his work on Drakengard 2.

He said of the project:

We’re a team of dedicated JRPG fans creating this game, and we’re focused on capturing the heart of what makes those games special – things like building strong friendships, character development, and truly moving moments. We want you to feel the thrill of starting a brand new adventure! The trailer you just watched was just a small glimpse of what’s to come, so be sure to follow us for more updates!

The press release describes a world affected by “lightfall,” a dangerous natural event that is fatal to anyone it contacts.

There’s an amnesiac and a magical girl, both of whom will predictably form the core of the story.

Even the official description admits the game is still largely a secret, and more information will be shared later.

This is a promising announcement, showing Konami is becoming more active again, though it’s probably best not to get your hopes up too much just yet.
