KPop Demon Hunters 2 Needs to Reveal the Secret Origin of One HUNTR/X Hero

Last year’s hit series, KPop Demon Hunters, has launched a new franchise for Sony and Netflix. Now that a sequel has been confirmed, everyone’s wondering what it will be about. The main goal from the first series will continue, but while the story previously centered on Rumi, the sequel needs to explore the secret origins of another HUNTR/X member.

Rumi’s half-demon identity will continue to be important in the next film, especially now that her friends know the truth, opening up opportunities for further exploration. However, the sequel should really focus on Zoey, the compelling and ruthless member of HUNTR/X. The first movie, and recent artwork, already hint at many reasons why she deserves a spotlight, and a deeper look into her story would be a great addition to the sequel.

Zoey Should Be The Focus of KPop Demon Hunters 2

Zoey is a captivating character because she’s both sweet and surprisingly tough. She often acts as a peacemaker between Rumi and Mira, and while she’s playfully eccentric, she’s incredibly confident and charismatic when performing. As the youngest member of the team and a Korean-American figuring things out, Zoey’s story feels largely untold in the first movie, which creates exciting possibilities for the sequel to explore her character further.

The KPop Demon Hunters art book reveals writer and director Maggie Kang’s insights into Zoey’s character. Kang explains that Zoey, a Korean-American from Burbank, secretly worries she isn’t Korean enough to fit in with the team, leading her to be overly eager to please. However, beneath her cheerful exterior lies a fierce loyalty – she’ll fiercely defend her teammates and expresses this strength through her rapping. Zoey often tries to keep the peace between her more outspoken sisters, always striving for a positive and harmonious environment.

In the film, Ji-young Yoo portrays Zoey, a character who constantly feels the need to prove her worth, even though she doesn’t need to. Yoo explains that as the only Korean-American in her friend group, Zoey is grappling with her identity and finding her place. This leads her to constantly offer ideas, hoping to demonstrate her value – a value she doesn’t fully recognize herself.

Animation director Joshua Beveridge describes Zoey as someone who’s cheerful, energetic, and eager to please when she’s not performing. But when she is on stage or in a fight, she becomes incredibly intense and even a little unpredictable.

The character has many interesting qualities that weren’t fully developed in the first movie, making her perfect for a central role in the sequel. We’d love to learn more about her past and see her grow more self-assured, as well as witness how her relationships with Rumi and Mira change over time. It would also be compelling to see how the group functions if Zoey is struggling and can’t always act as the peacemaker – who would take on that responsibility and keep everyone united?

As a huge fan, I really think Zoey needs to be a major player in the next movie. I’m hoping we finally get to see her origin story – how she became part of the team – and witness her grow into an even stronger version of herself. There’s just so much potential there to explore!
