A major reason for the huge popularity of KPop Demon Hunters is its exciting action. The film combines colorful animation with expertly planned fight choreography. What really sets the three main characters apart isn’t just their music, but also how they each fight and what weapons they use. Fans have been carefully studying the fight scenes, and now The Art of KPop Demon Hunters reveals the complete story behind how these unique fighting styles and weapons were created for Rumi (voiced by Arden Cho), Mira (voiced by May Hong), and Zoey (voiced by Ji-young Yoo).
The art book for HUNTR/X shows the weapons used were greatly influenced by the tools of Korean shamans, known as mudang. The design team combined historical items like bells, swords, and daggers with a touch of magic to match the film’s pop-star style. According to character designer Ami Thompson, she envisioned the weapons as being filled with musical energy – vibrant, shimmering, and flowing like light. She wanted them to look like visualized music, with notes and bars trailing from every movement, creating a seamless blend of performance and spiritual strength.

Each character in the group fights with a weapon that represents who they are and where they come from. Rumi uses the Sain-geom, a special “Four Tiger Sword” crafted only during auspicious times, as art director Celine DaHyeu Kim explains. Mira fights with the Gok-do, or “Curved Moon Sword,” a blade with origins in the ancient Gaya Confederacy. Character designer Euni Cho says its shape mirrors Mira’s own tall and powerful presence, creating a striking heroic image. Zoey completes the team with the Shin-kal, or “Spirit Blades,” designed with rounded edges to feel distinctly Korean and match her cheerful personality.
The Weapons Are Not the Only Tools the Hunters Use in KPop Demon Hunters

The team put a lot of work into designing the norigae – beautiful charms traditionally worn with hanbok, Korean traditional clothing – worn by the hunters. Initially, these charms were intended to be practical, even summoning the girls’ weapons. However, the team ultimately decided to focus on their aesthetic appeal, blending modern and traditional styles. The final designs reflect the characters’ personalities and inner worlds.
Mira’s traditional Korean ornament, called a norigae, was designed to show her true personality, which was different from her cool exterior. According to Cho, the ornament featured bows that matched Mira’s hairstyle, a large heart to represent her hidden warmth, and tiny charms of Rumi and Zoey, symbolizing how much she loves them like family. Zoey’s norigae was inspired by children’s ornaments from the Joseon period and included playful details like bells, a turtle, bunnies, and beads that spelled out her name, reflecting her creative and childlike spirit as a hunter and musician.
KPop Demon Hunters is currently streaming on Netflix.
