Kristen Stewart Shares Why She Chose to Come Out in SNL Monologue

Kristen Stewart is pulling back the curtain on one of the biggest decisions of her life.

The director of Chronology of Water explained that she decided to publicly come out as gay while hosting Saturday Night Live in February 2017. During her opening monologue, she famously told President Donald Trump, “I’m so gay, dude.”

In a preview of her February 2nd interview on ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis, Kristen shared with People that she wasn’t focused on revealing personal details about her relationship. Instead, she wanted to recognize that some people live in the shadows and don’t have the freedom to fully express themselves.

The 35-year-old explained that he’d been told his career would improve if he stopped showing public affection, even with his girlfriend. He responded by asking if people wanted him to hide a part of himself and support a system that excludes others, something he wasn’t willing to do.

I’m so thrilled to see Kristen doing so well, especially as she navigates her first year of marriage with Dylan Meyer! It’s amazing that they’re not only life partners but also creative collaborators – they’re working together on Kristen’s first time directing, a project called Chronology of Water, which I’m incredibly excited about.

In a recent interview with Will Marfuggi of TopMob News, she described her wife – who also produced the film – as having a very different but complementary energy. She jokingly admitted they might seem unstoppable as a couple, explaining that her wife is big-picture and contemplative, while she focuses on the details. She believes this contrast is what makes their partnership so effective.

Kristen didn’t think she’d been concealing her true self, but she believed openly discussing it would benefit others.

She explained that she’s never held back in relationships out of fear of being vulnerable. She genuinely wants people to know who she is, and she felt like those close to her already did, so she didn’t feel the need to overshare. However, she realized sharing her feelings might encourage others to open up as well.

Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer first sparked relationship rumors in August 2019, but Stewart later told Howard Stern they’d actually met six years prior on a movie set. They didn’t reconnect until a friend’s birthday party, where Stewart said she immediately wondered, “Where have you been and why didn’t we meet sooner?”

Stewart remembered telling Stern that the first time she confessed her love, it was late at night in a rundown bar. Her friends happened to be there, and as soon as they left, Stewart blurted out, ‘I’m so in love with you.’ She said it felt like that was that – the moment was complete.

In April 2021, Meyer shared a loving Instagram post celebrating her partner’s 31st birthday. Alongside a photo of them and their dog, she wrote, “Life is so much better with this adorable family! Happy birthday, you’re amazing.”

Stewart confirmed to Howard Stern in November 2021 that they are getting married. He explained that he actually did the proposing himself, wanting to be the one asked. He’d been clear about what he wanted, and his partner delivered perfectly – it was a really sweet proposal. They’re definitely marrying, and the wedding is on!

Stewart described their upcoming wedding to Stern as very relaxed. They don’t plan on a traditional ceremony with anyone being escorted down the aisle. Instead, they’ll simply exchange vows and then have a party to celebrate. Stewart sees it as a wonderful opportunity to gather with friends and publicly express their love.

The two attend a party a day before the 2022 Oscars.

I was so thrilled to see Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer together at the Oscars! She was nominated for her incredible performance as Princess Diana in Spencer, and they looked absolutely radiant walking the red carpet hand-in-hand. It was a beautiful moment!

In a March 2024 podcast interview on Not Skinny But Not Fat, Stewart discussed the possibility of having a family with Meyer, revealing they’ve taken steps like freezing their eggs to preserve their options.

“So if we want to, we can,” the Love Lies Bleeding star shared. “Keeping that open.”

According to TMZ, who shared photos of the event, Stewart and Meyer got married in a small ceremony on April 20th at Casita Del Campo, a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. Ashley Benson and Brandon Davis were among the guests.
