Lady Gaga Reveals Christmas Plans for Concert Film (And It’s All Connected to Joker: Folie à Deux)

With so much happening in the DC Universe right now, it’s easy to forget that a while ago, the sequel everyone was most excited about wasn’t the new Superman movie. It was a follow-up to the hugely successful film Joker, and anticipation grew even more when Lady Gaga joined the cast as Harley Quinn. While that sequel didn’t quite live up to expectations, Lady Gaga recently announced a Christmas concert film that actually is connected to the Joker project – though not in the way many people thought.

Lady Gaga is releasing a new concert film called Lady Gaga in Harlequin Live – One Night Only on YouTube the night before Christmas at 4 PM Pacific Time. The film was first shown at the Grammy Museum and recorded at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles on September 30, 2024. The concert was a special, after-midnight performance for a small audience. Gaga shared that she originally intended to perform only three songs to mark the release of the Joker film, but the event evolved into a complete album performance that fans now consider iconic.

I recently spoke with Lady Gaga, and she shared a fascinating story about how her performance alongside Joaquin Phoenix evolved. Initially, it was planned as a simple, three-song celebration after the ‘Joker’ premiere. But just days before, she and director Michael grabbed each other and decided to go all-in – to perform the entire album! It seems the experience of shooting the ‘Disease’ music video a couple of weeks prior really sparked something. She loved working with the director of photography, Marcell Rev, calling him an incredible artist who gets right into the heart of the work. They wondered, ‘What if we brought him on board for this?’ And the rest, as they say, is history.

Lady Gaga’s Harlequin Is The Project, Not The Character, So Don’t Expect Harley Quinn

It’s clear that Lady Gaga’s Harlequin project is linked to the Joker: Folie à Deux film, where she plays Harley Quinn. While many songs from Harlequin appeared in the movie, Gaga felt it was important to re-record them for her album to make them uniquely her own, and this approach extends to her live performances as well.

Throughout the concert, Lady Gaga will share personal stories about how her life experiences shaped her music, and how her music, in turn, affected her. She sometimes talks about herself as if she’s a character in her own story—a bit of a theatrical flourish—but it’s important to note she isn’t actually acting as Harley Quinn or trying to embody the character.

Lady Gaga in Harlequin Live — One Night Only will stream on YouTube at 4 PM PT on December 24th.
