Lanterns, an upcoming HBO Original drama series from DC Studios, has had its release date delayed.
When is the new Lanterns release date?
HBO and HBO Max’s upcoming series, Lanterns, based on the DC Comics characters, will now premiere near the end of summer 2026, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, announced on Thursday. It was initially planned to launch in early 2026.
Lanterns centers on John Stewart, a new member of the Green Lantern Corps, and Hal Jordan, a seasoned Lantern, as they team up to solve a murder with roots on Earth. Their investigation takes them to the American Midwest and uncovers a disturbing mystery.
Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler play John Stewart and Hal Jordan in the series. The cast also features Kelly Macdonald as Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette Stewart, Jasmine Cephas Jones as a younger Bernadette, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Sherman Augustus as John Stewart Sr., J. Alphonse Nicholson as a young John Stewart Sr., Paul Ben-Victor as Antaan, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.
Guest stars include Chris Coy as Waylon Sanders and Cary Christopher as Noah.
Chris Mundy leads “Lanterns” as both executive producer and showrunner. He wrote the first episode alongside fellow executive producers Damon Lindelof and Tom King. James Hawes, known for directing “The Amateur” (2025), directed the initial two episodes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also directing episodes for the series.
James Gunn, Peter Safran, Hawes, and Ron Schmidt all served as executive producers on the series. Filming started in February 2025. “Lanterns” is a production of HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios, and will have eight episodes.
The DC Universe’s first storyline, ‘Gods and Monsters,’ will include a series focused on the Lanterns. It’s expected to be released in summer 2026, following the ‘Supergirl’ movie (June 26th) and preceding the ‘Clayface’ film (September 11th).
