Warner Bros. Discovery has announced a release timeframe for the new HBO Max series Lanterns, following recent online speculation about possible delays. Earlier reports suggested the show might premiere after the Supergirl movie, but that plan has now been ruled out.
The show centers on new recruit John Stewart and experienced Lantern Hal Jordan, who team up as intergalactic police to solve a murder mystery unfolding in the American Midwest.
What is the new release date update for Lanterns?
Warner Bros. Discovery recently told its shareholders that the series Lanterns is still on track to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in early 2026, dismissing recent reports that suggested it was delayed. Lanterns will be the third series released as part of the first phase of the new DC Universe (DCU), known as ‘Gods and Monsters’.
The show features a talented cast, including Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. Kelly MacDonald plays Kerry, with Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro. Other cast members include Chris Coy as Waylon Sanders, Jasmine Cephas Jones as young Bernadette, Sherman Augustus as John Sr., J. Alphonse Nicholson as a young John Sr., Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, and Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette. Notably, Nathan Fillion appears as Guy Gardner, a role he first played in James Gunn’s Superman movie before joining the HBO series.
Lanterns is led by showrunner Chris Mundy, known for his work on ‘True Detective: Night Country’ and ‘Ozark’. Damon Lindelof (‘The Leftovers’, ‘Watchmen’) and Tom King (‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’) are co-writers and executive producers. Mundy has stated the series will unfold across multiple time periods. Directing episodes are James Hawes, Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov.
