After some criticism about Larian Studios using AI to create content, CEO Swen Vincke has explained how the studio plans to use the technology.
Larian developers are starting to use artificial intelligence in their work, as Vincke recently told Bloomberg. This includes brainstorming new concepts, creating initial artwork, and even writing temporary text.
According to Vincke, artificial intelligence will help Larian release Divinity faster than Baldur’s Gate 3. They’re aiming for a development process of three to four years for Divinity, compared to the six years it took to create Baldur’s Gate 3.
Larian Studios’ Vincke has stated they are exploring generative AI during Divinity’s development, but assures players the game will launch with entirely human-created content. He emphasized, ‘We’re writing everything ourselves,’ meaning no AI-generated content will be included at release.
Bloomberg reported some initial disagreement among Larian developers, but according to company founder Michael Douse, most of the team now supports how they’re using AI.

A recent Bloomberg article seems to have misinterpreted a statement regarding Larian Studios and its CEO, Vincke. The article suggests Larian is aggressively pursuing generative AI, but this claim appears to be based on a misrepresentation of the original context.
The way this was said has sparked a lot of discussion online. Some gamers have expressed disappointment with Vincke and the studio, feeling that using AI in this way is harmful to both artistic creation and game developers, and they worry it could lead to industry-wide job losses.
Vincke responded on X, stating that Larian’s use of AI wouldn’t cause layoffs, and that the studio is actually expanding its art team with new hires.
“Holy f**k guys we’re not ‘pushing hard’ for or replacing concept artists with AI.
Our art team includes 72 talented artists, including 23 concept artists, and we’re currently expanding! We produce original artwork, and I’m incredibly proud of the team’s accomplishments.

Someone directly asked me about our concept art and whether we use AI. I explained that we use AI for exploration and brainstorming, but I made it clear that our artists – who are truly exceptional – are the ones who actually create the concept art.
We use AI tools for initial research and inspiration, similar to how we’d use Google or art books. In the beginning stages of a project, AI helps us create a basic composition, but we always replace it with original artwork. The difference between the two is significant.
Vencke explains that the studio sees AI as a way to help developers become more effective, not to take their jobs. They hired people for their skills and creativity, but encourage them to explore how AI tools can simplify their work.
