The latest trailer for season 27 of Law & Order: SVU shows the return of one of the show’s most terrifying villains. After over two decades on television since its 1999 debut, Olivia Benson has investigated countless disturbing crimes. While shows like the One Chicago series often center on the characters’ personal lives, Law & Order: SVU typically prioritizes the details of each case. However, the show sometimes manages to blend compelling case narratives with character development.
The Law & Order: SVU franchise has revisited storylines where the detectives themselves become targets or suffer consequences from their cases many times, often to add excitement and raise the tension. Season 27 continues this trend, but with a unique twist: the case is deeply connected to Detective Amanda Rollins’ personal history, stemming from a relationship thirteen years in the making.
NBC has released a trailer for the upcoming episode of Law & Order: SVU (season 27, episode 11) which features the return of Henry Mesner. The trailer shows that Mesner, a well-known psychopath, has changed since his last appearance in 2021. Even though he’s still in prison, it seems he’s managed to manipulate someone into carrying out a plan to target Rollins. You can watch the trailer here:
The character Henry first appeared in Season 14, Episode 19 of Law & Order: SVU, titled “Born Psychopath.” What began as a seemingly ordinary family argument quickly developed into a complex, season-long storyline. This case differed from the typical crimes investigated by Benson and her team, focusing instead on Henry’s psychopathic behavior – a problem his parents tried to overlook until he threatened them.
Henry’s last appearance on Law & Order: SVU ended with him being arrested after a disturbing trial where he attempted to control the legal proceedings. Notably, his focus has changed over time from targeting his inner circle to now fixating on Rollins. While multi-episode storylines are common for Law & Order: SVU, this particular story’s nearly fifteen-year arc demonstrates the power of a long-running series to develop complex narratives.
As a huge fan of Law & Order: SVU, I’m really wondering if this season will finally give us closure for Henry’s character. Even if he makes it through what’s coming up, I have a feeling he’ll always be looking for a way to get back at Rollins if he gets the opportunity. What’s really cool is seeing the actor age into the role – he’s still young enough that I’d honestly love to see where they take his character as he gets older. It adds so much to the story!
