A mysterious new cross-buy icon has been datamined on the PS5.
The symbol, found directly on the game console, was first noticed by Amethxst on X (formerly Twitter). They believe it was added sometime in March 2025.
The new icons discovered by the user appear to be genuine Sony designs. Although some icons are already used for features like Power Saver mode, the ‘Cross-Buy’ and ‘PS5/PC’ logos are completely new and fit with Sony’s existing style.
We’re still not sure exactly what Sony plans to do with these symbols, but it seems likely they’re preparing to let players buy a game once and play it on both PlayStation 5 and PC – similar to how Xbox’s ‘Play Anywhere’ feature works.
It’s unclear if Sony is planning to create a PC version of the PlayStation Store, but it would be a challenge to get players to switch from Steam. They might try to attract users by offering cross-buy options, letting people purchase games on PlayStation and PC at the same time.
There’s also speculation that the ‘Cross-Buy’ icon relates to a potential new handheld device from Sony. However, we initially thought this device would simply be a portable version of the existing console, letting you play games you already purchased. Because of this, it wasn’t clear why it would need a special ‘Cross-Buy’ label.
It’s also possible the company might simply add a ‘Cross-Buy’ icon to games already available on both PS5 and PS4, letting players know they’ll receive both versions. However, this is likely the least interesting option. It’s worth mentioning that this icon isn’t currently displayed on the PS4.
As a PlayStation fan, I find this discovery really interesting! It looks like this symbol is actually on the PS5 itself, and it’s hard to believe Sony would include it unless they have plans to do something with it. It definitely makes you wonder what it all means!
