Daisuke Ishiwatari, the lead creator of Guilty Gear, recently shared his worries about the current state of big-budget game development, and it’s hard to dismiss his concerns given his reputation as a highly innovative designer.
In an interview with 4Gamer (translated by Automaton), the creator cautioned employees against working on the same projects for extended periods, suggesting it could be detrimental.
Today, it’s typical for game development teams to include people who live in the region the game is aimed at. But, as one expert points out, it’s risky to focus on a very specific skill for many years, only to find out you lack other abilities later on.
Ishiwatari explains that you’ll likely struggle when a project faces difficulties, and leaving your job might not easily lead to a new opportunity.
His remarks seem to be a criticism of how large, modern video games are made, where teams often spend years – sometimes almost a decade – developing just one major title.
He also points out the current lack of originality in big-budget games, explaining that these massive projects tend to avoid risks due to the huge financial investments involved. He notes, “Many game developers dream of creating something truly unique, but those chances are very limited in today’s industry.”
Ishiwatari has dedicated his career to the Guilty Gear series. However, his recent comments come after the release of DAMON and BABY, a new game from Arc System Works that’s quite different from anything he’s done before.
He shared that he and the team took a very flexible approach to developing the action game. They encouraged developers to follow their creative instincts when designing the game’s style and overall experience, rather than forcing them to constantly rework their ideas.
This seems like a very liberating experience, and Ishiwatari believes it’s incredibly helpful for giving teams a wider range of viewpoints.
