I was really saddened to hear about the passing of Jim Ward, a fantastic voice actor who brought so many animated characters to life on shows like those on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. He was sixty-six years old. With a long and impressive career, he’s left a huge mark on the animation world, and it’s a big loss for both his fans and everyone who worked with him. He’ll definitely be remembered for a long time to come.
Stephanie Miller, a fellow voice actor and radio host, shared the sad news of Jim Ward’s passing on social media this week. She posted a message from Jim’s partner, Janice, who said, “Our wonderful ‘voice deity,’ as Stephanie affectionately called Jim, passed away today at 10:45 AM. Please let Steph know.” Jim and Stephanie co-hosted a radio program together for many years before Jim left in 2017. Janice explained that Jim passed away due to complications from advanced Alzheimer’s, which he was being treated for in Los Angeles. Given his extensive and beloved work, Jim will be deeply missed.
The Work of Jim Ward
Jim Ward was well-known for voicing Chet Ubetcha, the detached news anchor on Nickelodeon’s Fairly OddParents, who often appeared in Timmy Turner’s adventures. Beyond Fairly OddParents, Jim also lent his voice to several other popular Nickelodeon shows, including Danny Phantom, Avatar: The Last Airbender, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and Hey Arnold!. However, his work wasn’t limited to just Nickelodeon; he contributed to many different channels and programs.
For Cartoon Network, Tara Strong voiced Diamondhead in Ben 10, and also provided the voice for XLR8 on the same show. She’s widely known in the gaming world as the voice of Captain Qwark in the Ratchet & Clank series, a character many fans consider a hero. Her most recent role was again as Captain Qwark in the Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie television special.
Beyond his live-action work, Ward voiced many iconic video game characters, including Krauser from Resident Evil 4, Perceptor from Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, and Mannimarco from The Elder Scrolls Online, among countless others. He even played both Spider-Man and Venom in the 1993 game The Amazing Spider-Man Vs. The Kingpin, demonstrating his impressive range and skill as a voice actor across various platforms.
Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Jim Ward during this difficult time.
