I’m so hyped for Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight coming out in May 2026! They’ve been showing off all these awesome new costumes you can unlock, and it’s really looking like a fantastic superhero game. What I especially love is how much they’re celebrating Batman’s history – everything from the comics to the movies and beyond. Honestly, I think other superhero games should take note of how this game handles costumes and really respects what made the character so popular in the first place.
A major strength of this Lego Batman game is its blend of action-packed combat, similar to the Batman: Arkham series, and its many nods to Batman’s history on film. It references almost every live-action Batman movie, starting with Tim Burton’s 1989 film and going all the way up to Matt Reeves’ The Batman from 2022. Drawing inspiration from both the comics and animated series as well, Legacy of the Dark Knight pulls from all corners of Batman’s appearances in popular culture.
Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight Adds Absolute Batman & Other Looks As Official Costumes

A new Dev Diary video highlighted the Batcave’s customization options in Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, revealing several new Batman costumes for the first time. Players can upgrade Batman’s skills and change the appearance of both the hero and the Batcave itself. While features like customizable Batmobiles and mini-games are cool, the revealed cosmetic options are surprisingly extensive.
The latest Batcave Dev Diary showcased various Batman costumes, including the design inspired by the critically acclaimed comic series, Absolute Batman. This version of Batman exists in a grittier universe where Bruce Wayne comes from a working-class background, a detail reflected in the suit’s tougher appearance – like the prominent, spiked shoulder pads – within Lego Batman. The diary also revealed lesser-known looks, such as Batman’s samurai-inspired outfit from the Batman Ninja animated movies.
Honestly, I was pretty surprised to see Absolute Batman as a playable costume in the new Lego Batman game, but it’s awesome! When the game was first announced, I figured we’d just get the classic Batman looks from the movies and comics, maybe a couple of hidden outfits. But it’s cool to see they’re going all-in on all the Batman suits, even the newer ones. It really sets a high standard and makes me hope other superhero games will follow suit!
Other Superhero Titles Tend To Keep Cosmetics Original Or Connected To The Same Sources

I’m really impressed with how deep Lego Batman goes with its costumes. They’re pulling designs from everything Batman – even stuff from comics and shows most people have never heard of! It seems obvious, but a lot of superhero games don’t do that. Take Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, for example. Insomniac made a ton of completely new suits for Peter and Miles, instead of just using the classic looks. It’s cool, but Lego Batman is really digging into the entire history of the character.
As a big Marvel fan, I’ve noticed something a little frustrating with games like Marvel’s Midnight Sons and Marvel Rivals. They often put limits on how characters actually look compared to the comics. Take Marvel Rivals, for example – it has tons of skins, but surprisingly few that really capture iconic comic book designs. Like, the Symbiote Spider-Man skin is cool, but it changes up the classic black suit look to fit the game’s style. It feels like they miss opportunities to include really fun and exciting nods to a character’s history, which is a shame!
Varied Looks & Obscure References For Superhero Cosmetics Are Far Better In Games

Video games offer a unique chance to delve into a superhero’s history, allowing for lots of hidden references and collectibles—often without needing to tie them directly to the main story. A big part of the appeal in many Marvel and DC games is unlocking different outfits for characters and using them throughout the game. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight really excels at this, including nearly every Batman costume from his many appearances.
Superhero games can appeal to more dedicated fans by offering a wider range of costume options. Including details and references to a character’s comic book history – like lesser-known costumes – is a great way to show appreciation for those who truly know the character, especially for icons like Batman. While new designs are welcome, games also have the opportunity to showcase a character’s entire visual evolution, celebrating both classic and modern looks.
When designing costumes for superhero games, it’s often more effective to draw inspiration from a wide range of comic book appearances instead of creating entirely new designs. Players will likely prefer recognizable outfits, and unique or lesser-known costumes can generate a lot of excitement, as demonstrated by recent additions in games like Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.
