The newest addition to the *Star Wars* universe, *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past*, has arrived and it’s bigger and more exciting than before. The four-episode animated mini-series *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy* from 2024 was a delightful experience for *Star Wars* fans. It centers around Sig Greebling (voiced by Gaten Matarazzo), a Force Builder who mostly tries to hide his abilities. When Sig and his brother Dev (Tony Revolori) visit an ancient Jedi temple and remove an artifact known as the Cornerstone, it unexpectedly changes the entire galaxy.
The show’s concept allowed creators Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit to reimagine any character from the entire Star Wars saga, no matter when they lived. This led to some surprising changes: Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) became a podracer, Darth Vader (Matt Sloan) fought on the side of good in white armor, and Jar Jar (Ahmed Best) surprisingly became a Sith Lord – and Dev also joined the Sith in this new version of the galaxy.
The recent changes offered a playful and nostalgic experience for Star Wars enthusiasts, reimagining characters and their relationships in unexpected ways. *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past* builds on that inventive spirit, offering a lighthearted, consistently engaging, and ultimately enjoyable take on the beloved Star Wars universe for fans.
Pieces of the Past Finds Brilliant New Riffs on Star Wars Lore
LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past continues the story of a reimagined Star Wars universe. Sig still believes he can redeem his ambitious and evil brother, Dev, also known as Darth Devastator. A new threat emerges with Solitus (voiced by Dan Stevens), a former Jedi Master who escapes from prison and wants to destroy everything, and he has a history with the Jedi Bob (Bobby Moynihan).
The unique element of ‘Pieces of the Past’ is the Forcehold – a dimension filled with echoes of the galaxy’s history. It’s created whenever something significant changes the galactic landscape, like the Cornerstone did in Season 1. This means the Forcehold contains different versions of familiar characters, promising a funny and action-packed season.
This fan-made series is a fast-paced, funny take on the *Star Wars* universe, packed with action. It reimagines familiar characters like Obi-Wan, Rey, and even Darth Maul, and introduces Cal Kestis from *Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order*. You’ll even see the entire Skywalker family together! The story is full of clever nods to the existing *Star Wars* lore, and part of the enjoyment is discovering how all these changes happen – so we won’t reveal any spoilers here.
Sometimes, *Pieces* tries to cover too much ground with its references and storylines. It’s tough to introduce a new threat, villains, and a lot of different plot points in just four short episodes, even with a comedic approach. While the fast pace usually works for the action and humor, it can occasionally feel rushed. Overall, though, it’s a solid and consistently enjoyable season.
Pieces Is Jam-Packed With Talented Vocal Talents
While *Pieces of the Past* isn’t considered official Star Wars material, it’s unlikely these characters will appear in future films or shows. Solitus remains a compelling villain, largely due to Dan Stevens’ fantastic voice acting, which brings a genuine sense of threat to the Star Wars universe. It’s a shame we probably won’t see that performance in any official stories.
Gaten Matarazzo delivers a strong performance as Sig, constantly trying to convince Dev to abandon his dark path. Tony Revolori shines as Darth Devastator/Dev, who craves power but secretly longs for connection, making him surprisingly open to Sig’s pleas for them to remain brothers. Their relationship is compelling and feels more engaging than ever before.
I’m really excited about the cast this season! So many familiar and talented voices are returning, and it just makes the show even better. We’re getting Alan Tudyk back as K-2SO – he’s fantastic, even when playing a villain! And of course, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO is always a treat. It’s cool to see Kelly Marie Tran as Darth Rose and Billy Dee Williams as The Landolorian too. Honestly, it’s an incredibly strong cast all around.
Despite its lengthy title, *LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past* is a fast-paced and often funny take on the Star Wars universe. The new villain, voiced by Dan Stevens, is a standout, and both returning characters and new baddies are well-developed and fit the story nicely. While some moments happen quickly, it’s an overall win for fans.
Final Rating: 8/10
