The first Life Is Strange game showed that a video game focused on story could still become hugely popular. Since 2015, this interactive drama has attracted millions of players and led to several sequels and spin-offs, all exploring the difficult emotions of growing up and the presence of supernatural powers. Because the game prioritizes characters and choices over action, it always seemed like a good fit for a TV series. However, plans for a TV adaptation faced many delays until Amazon MGM Studios stepped in. Now, the long-awaited live-action series is finally moving forward, with the main cast beginning to be assembled.
The upcoming TV series based on Life Is Strange has cast Tatum Grace Hopkins as Max Caulfield, the photography student who can manipulate time, and Maisy Stella as her strong-willed friend, Chloe Price. The game’s popularity relies heavily on the dynamic between Max and Chloe, so the success of the show depends on how well these two actresses portray their connection. Stella is already known from her work on Nashville, while Hopkins is new to television but has a strong background in Broadway. Choosing relatively unknown leads is a deliberate decision by the studio, aiming to let viewers connect with the characters without being influenced by pre-existing ideas about the actresses.
Life Is Strange Is Part of Amazon’s Ambitious Slate of Game Adaptations

Amazon is adding a Life Is Strange adaptation to its growing list of video game projects, which already includes popular titles like Tomb Raider, Wolfenstein, Mass Effect, Warhammer, and God of War. Amazon has had great success with Fallout by creating a new story within the game’s world, rather than simply retelling the original. However, adapting existing characters and stories hasn’t always worked well. While fans loved the first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, the initial image from the upcoming God of War adaptation received a lot of criticism. The animated series Secret Level also received mixed reviews, with some episodes being stronger than others.
Despite the inherent challenges of translating interactive media to television, the creative team assembled for Life Is Strange indicates a bright future for the adaptation. Beyond the promising casting of Stella and Hopkins, Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted the project to showrunner Charlie Covell, a writer with a proven track record of handling complex narratives. Covell previously created the critically acclaimed Netflix series The End of the F*ing World, an exploration of teenage angst, trauma, and rebellion. Because Life Is Strange fundamentally relies on the overwhelming emotional turbulence of high school existence mixed with supernatural elements, Covell’s specific expertise makes them an ideal candidate to navigate the source material.
