Light of Motiram Has Been Delisted From Stores as Sony and Tencent Settle Lawsuit

Sony and Tencent have settled their legal dispute over claims that Tencent’s game, Light of Motiram, was too similar to Sony’s Horizon franchise. According to The Game Post, a court filing shows both companies have requested the case be dismissed because they’ve reached a settlement agreement.

The details of this agreement are private, but the court has officially closed the case, preventing Sony from bringing a similar claim in the future. You can read the complete court document below.

Following the rules of federal court and a private agreement between all parties involved, Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (the Plaintiff) and Tencent America LLC, Proxima Beta U.S. LLC, Tencent Holdings Ltd., Proxima Beta PTE Ltd., and Tencent Technology (Shanghai) Company Ltd. (the Defendants) agree to the following, as represented by their respective lawyers:

All requests before the court are cancelled, and this case is now closed permanently. Each side will be responsible for paying their own legal fees and expenses.

Although the specifics of the agreement aren’t public, it appears one requirement was the removal of the game Light of Motiram from online stores. As a result, it’s no longer available for purchase on platforms like Steam or the Epic Games Store.

Sony originally sued Tencent in July, claiming they copied ideas from the Horizon game series. Sony described Tencent’s Light of Motiram as a near-identical copy of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, particularly in terms of how the games look. Sony asked the court for financial compensation and a legal order to prevent Tencent from further using elements of the Horizon franchise.

Tencent criticized Sony’s lawsuit as an unfair effort to control popular culture. They claimed Sony wasn’t truly concerned with stopping piracy or protecting intellectual property, but rather with limiting competition.

Tencent criticized Sony’s attempt to claim ownership over elements of the popular culture landscape, specifically regarding the game Horizon Zero Dawn. In a statement, Tencent pointed out that Sony describes the game’s world as unique, but this claim is contradicted by Sony’s own developers and the many other games that share similar themes and features. Tencent argues Sony is improperly trying to monopolize these common elements through its legal action.

Honestly, I wasn’t surprised when the company pushed back against Sony’s lawsuit. They basically said Sony was overreacting to the game’s look, and they even pointed out that plenty of other popular games – like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Biomutant, and Outer Wilds – have a similar style. It feels like Sony is trying to claim something that’s pretty common in the gaming world.

In October, Sony strongly refuted Tencent’s claims, responding with a detailed 42-page statement. Sony argued that Tencent’s promotion of a similar game had already harmed PlayStation, causing real confusion among consumers – a point Tencent hadn’t been able to dispute. Sony asked the court to address this ongoing and future harm caused by the imitation game.
