When Tencent unveiled their upcoming base-building survival cooperative game, “Light of Motiram,” there was an instant wave of criticism comparing it to Guerrilla Games’ “Horizon” series. Even Sony seemed to agree, taking legal action against them, labeling the game a “slavish Horizon clone.” As a gamer, I found myself intrigued by the similarities and differences between these two games.
A few days have passed, and it appears Tencent is working on making changes to distinguish the game more. The Steam page, which previously displayed an Aloy-like character and robotic elephants (as depicted earlier), has been revised to exclude these elements. References to “colossal machines” are no longer present; however, it remains set in a world where civilization is long forgotten, inhabited by primitive cultures and subjected to harsh weather conditions that will challenge one’s survival abilities.
The question of whether Sony will withdraw their lawsuit following the release of “Light of Motiram,” a game developed by Polaris Quest scheduled for Q1 2027, still remains unanswered. However, it’s possible that this new release could create more distance between the two parties. Keep an eye out for updates!
Simultaneously, the ongoing lawsuit disclosed that the Horizon series has already sold more than 38 million units. Although Guerrilla Games hasn’t officially confirmed a sequel, it appears one might be under development and could take some time to release. Additionally, there are rumors suggesting an online game, presumably developed in collaboration with NCSoft, is also being developed.
