The sequel to the 2016 horror film Lights Out is moving forward with production after ten years of development. The original film was a financial success, earning five times its production budget in theaters.
Up-and-coming screenwriter Connor Osborn McIntyre will be writing the script for the long-awaited sequel to Lights Out. Lawrence Gray, who produced the first film, is back, along with original writer Eric Heisserer and director David F. Sandberg. All three will also produce Lights Out 2.
James Wan, the director of Saw, is producing the sequel through his Atomic Monster banner, alongside producers Ben Everard and Lotta Losten. Wan also directed the first film. Currently, a director for the sequel hasn’t been announced, and it’s unknown if David Sandberg, who directed the original, will return. Sandberg’s first feature film was the original, and he later directed Annabelle: Creation, Until Dawn, and the Shazam! movies.
Details about the plot of Lights Out 2 are currently unknown, and no cast members have been announced yet. The first Lights Out film featured Teresa Palmer, Maria Bello, Gabriel Bateman, and Alexander DiPersia. Inspired by a viral short film, the story centers around a terrifying entity that only appears and attacks when the lights are turned off. A woman haunted by this spirit must confront her past and protect her brother from its deadly reach.
As a huge horror fan, I remember being really excited when Lights Out did so well in theaters – it made over $148 million on a tiny $5 million budget! Because of that success, Warner Bros. and New Line quickly announced they were making a sequel. Initially, it looked like director James Sandberg and writer Scott Heisserer would be back, but the project seemed to stall out and disappear for years. It’s only recently that we’ve started hearing some real news about it again.
