As a big fan of Taylor Sheridan’s work, people always ask me which show of his doesn’t get enough attention. Of course, Yellowstone is huge, and Landman and Tulsa King have their fans, but I honestly think Lawmen: Bass Reeves is seriously underrated. However, the one I really think people are missing out on is Lioness. It’s a fantastic action thriller – I genuinely believe it would impress even people who aren’t familiar with Sheridan’s other shows!
Lioness is a thrilling spy series that quickly stands out as one of the best in its genre. The show has two seasons so far, with the second receiving particularly high praise (a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). A third season is currently being filmed and is expected to arrive in late 2026. Taylor Sheridan, the creator, is writing all the episodes again, giving him another chance to showcase his storytelling talents beyond Westerns. Whether Season 3 will surpass the first two remains to be seen – you’ll have to watch and find out!
‘Lioness’ Has Decent Streaming Numbers, But It Could Do Better
The show Lioness has changed a lot over its two seasons, but it originally centers around a top-secret CIA program. This program trains female operatives to get close to the wives, girlfriends, or other female relatives of key targets. The idea is to build trust with these women, making it easier to locate and ultimately eliminate the target. The show features strong performances from a talented cast, including Zoe Saldaña as Joe McNamara, the CIA officer leading the Lioness program, and supporting actors Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Kelly.
The series Lioness got off to a great start. It became Paramount+’s most-watched global premiere at the time, attracting roughly 6 million viewers worldwide in its first week, including those who watched a preview on the Paramount Network, as reported by Deadline. However, this record was later broken by another Taylor Sheridan show, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which ultimately didn’t maintain its initial popularity.
It’s understandable if some viewers stopped watching Lioness early on – it starts a bit slowly. However, the second season is significantly better than the first, so it’s worth sticking with! Don’t give up before you get to the good stuff. In fact, this is one of the best new shows on television in a while. Streaming numbers show it consistently ranked among the top 10 shows on Paramount+, which is great, but more people should definitely be watching!
No Show Tackles “Special Operations” Better Than ‘Lioness’

Similar to shows like Jack Ryan and Strike Back, Lioness appeals to viewers who enjoy action focused on small, intelligence-driven teams, rather than large-scale warfare. The series is a resounding success, giving creator Taylor Sheridan a level of creative freedom reminiscent of his work on Sicario. It also allows directors to develop a distinctive visual style, using striking lighting and smooth camera work. The camera moves with an effortless grace, sweeping across expansive sets, and the series expertly utilizes tracking shots – arguably better than almost any other show on television.
Lioness stands out because it deeply explores the experiences of female spies, something previous spy stories haven’t done as thoroughly. Unlike shows like Nikita or Salt, this series portrays realistic, gritty spy work with intense and impactful moments. While it features violence, it’s not used for shock value; instead, it accurately reflects the dangerous and difficult world these agents operate in as they fight against injustice. The show skillfully balances intense action with more nuanced and delicate scenes, offering a refreshing perspective within the genre.
Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman deliver outstanding performances, and it’s no surprise they’ve received numerous awards. The show works well as a gripping and insightful story about the dangers and hidden difficulties of modern war and spying – and the darkness people are capable of.
