While many anime series have been turned into live-action shows, the recent success of the One Piece adaptation on Netflix has sparked even more interest in bringing popular anime to life. Several other well-known franchises, including My Hero Academia, Naruto, One-Punch Man, and Samurai Champloo, are already planning live-action versions. And now, a less famous anime is also getting a live-action remake, promising a new story set on the high seas.
Originally a manga created by Kaiji Kawaguchi and first published in 1988, The Silent Service gained popularity through its various adaptations. While an anime version appeared in 1997, the story has found the most success with live-action films and series. A new film was released in 2023 and is available on Amazon Prime Video, followed by a television season titled The Silent Service: The Battle of Arctic Ocean, also on Amazon. Another film is currently in production, though its release date and title haven’t been announced yet. Over time, The Silent Service has become a beloved classic, particularly among anime fans.
What is The Silent Service?
Takeo Osawa, the star and a producer of the new live-action series, announced the show’s continuation, expressing his excitement to finally share the news. While the original story is far from over, they’ve begun filming enough material to cover the entire source material. He acknowledged the challenge of adapting such a long story, but revealed the sequel will involve filming on location internationally. The dynamic between his character and Fukamachi, previously rivals, will shift as they face a larger threat and are forced to work together – a turning point familiar to fans of the original story. Osawa hinted that the sequel will surpass the quality and scope of the first drama and movie.
If you haven’t heard of The Silent Service, the story feels very realistic, like it could happen today. Similar to anime like Vinland Saga and Kingdom, it’s inspired by actual events. The story begins with Japan and the United States jointly building a submarine after the Cold War. This submarine carries nuclear weapons and has the power to change everything, and the crew decides to take control of it. They declare themselves an independent nation, hoping to achieve peace by using the submarine’s nuclear capabilities as a deterrent. While the original anime isn’t currently available for streaming, a recent live-action movie adaptation is available on Amazon.
I’m so excited this live-action anime is getting another season, and this time it’s all about a brand new voyage! I’d love to hear what you all think – share your thoughts in the comments and let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum!
