This year, *KPop Demon Hunters* has become Netflix’s most popular movie, animated or live-action. Since its release earlier this summer, the film has continued to gain viewers, with many discovering it or rewatching it repeatedly. This success has sparked discussions about the future of the franchise and potential plans from Netflix and Sony Pictures.
There was initial buzz that *KPop Demon Hunters* might get several sequels on Netflix, and even a live-action remake. However, creators Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans recently told the BBC that a live-action version isn’t happening. Kang explained that the film’s success relies on the freedom of animation, stating that a live-action adaptation would feel too realistic and wouldn’t work for the story.
KPop Demon Hunters Creators Debunk Live-Action Movie Plans
When asked about a live-action adaptation of *KPop Demon Hunters*, Ryan Kang explained that the show’s style and humor lend themselves perfectly to animation. He believes the characters would feel too realistic in live-action, and it just wouldn’t work. Erica Appelhans agreed, adding that animation allows for incredible, impossible visuals that would be difficult to achieve otherwise. She highlighted that animation lets them combine fantastic qualities in ways that wouldn’t be possible with live actors.
According to Appelhans, Rumi is a dynamic character – one moment a playful comedian, the next performing acrobatic moves and even seeming to fly. That’s the beauty of animation – it allows you to go beyond reality. Appelhans noted that many anime adaptations feel stiff, but this film avoids that issue. Its success likely comes from capturing the vibrant energy of K-pop concerts and amplifying it with exciting, fluid animation.
What’s Next for KPop Demon Hunters?

There are currently no official plans for the future of *KPop Demon Hunters*. The movie will be back in theaters this fall for a special event, and there’s talk online about a short film that was made after the movie’s release on Netflix. However, nothing is confirmed yet regarding what fans can expect. The directors do have some ideas for continuing the story, though.
Kang emphasized there’s plenty of potential for continuing the story and developing these characters further. He promised fans that any follow-up would only happen if the creators felt it was a worthwhile story, something they themselves would be excited to create and watch.
